Meet Alexis Bradby: Stand-up Comedian & Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Bradby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I think the habits that help me succeed the most are consistency and uplifting others. Although I have a lot further to go in my career, I believe I’ve only been able to amount the current level of success I have from these habits. I try to consistently work on my jokes, new and old. Pre-pandemic that looked like going to open mics throughout the week in-between shows and meeting up with other comedians to talk out ideas, and things haven’t changed that drastically despite our local stay-at-home orders. I am still able to do online open mics and virtually connect with other comedians in between Zoom shows. I also have been trying to post content online consistently, which is extremely hard to do since I’m a huge self-critic. Besides being consistent, I’m also not shy about giving people credit where it’s due. From famous comedians to people just starting out, if something you said was funny, I will let you know. If I see a funny video, I try to comment. I treat people like I want to be treated, and somehow the good energy I put out there comes back to me one way or another.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m most excited about how hard I am going to work once I am able to perform regularly on stages again. I think sometimes I took some of my smaller opportunities for granted, but I will never do that again! I got to where I am today simply by not giving up. I’ve seen a lot of people who I started with quit doing comedy or they’re not doing it at the same level I am. While I know that everyone has their own battles, overall it just seems like people give up or are afraid of putting in the work. It’s definitely not an easy journey, and I’m sure I haven’t even had some of my hardest battles yet. I think the hardest challenges are the daily ones I deal with such as imposter syndrome. I’ve learned in my relatively short time pursuing comedy as a career that relationships are everything and that if you do your best work, people will notice. I want the world to know that my intention is to always make people laugh. Maybe sometimes I’ll say the wrong words the first time, but I am constantly learning and always growing. I ultimately want to give people new perspectives on social issues but in a way where they don’t realize it because they’re laughing so hard.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hey best friend! Okay, so I’m picking you up from LAX at 10 AM. We’ll swing by Randy’s Donuts in Inglewood to get some delicious glazed raise donuts. We’ll walk around the downtown Inglewood area and check out some local shops before we grab lunch at The Serving Spoon because it tastes like authentic Southern food and has the kindest people that work there. I’m not crazy when it comes to setting an itinerary, so just know the rest of the week will be way more relaxed. The other places we HAVE to grab food from are Division 3, Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, Cha Cha Chili, and Kogi Taqueria. Some fun activities will be going to Grand Park for the DTLA Summer Dance Nights, watching Crack’Em Up Thursdays at The World Famous Comedy Store, and dancing at The Room. I want us to end the week by riding the beach bike path from Will Rogers State Beach to the Redondo Pier. That’ll tire you out before you get on the plane, plus you’ll get to see how beautiful the coast is.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my dear friend Eriana Blankinship. I jokingly call her my creative consultant, but she really should be getting paid for her services. She’s been helpful since the second time I’ve ever stepped on the stage to do stand-up (I didn’t know her the first time or else I’m sure she would have been there). She’s listened to me run sets, helped clean up jokes for late night submissions and has approved many captions for Instagram. We met from being randomly paired roommates during our first year at USC, and I don’t think I’d be where I am today without her continued support!
