We had the good fortune of connecting with Meiko Arquillos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meiko, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
It is very important to stay true to yourself. There are so many talented photographers/directors out there and I was always intimidated by them. I felt I was never good enough, cool enough, or talented enough. Everything in my life changed after I started following what inspired me, and stopped worrying about what other people were doing. I think knowing what makes you happy helps you find out who you are. The more you know who you are, the more you can stay true to yourself. It gives you a sense of groundedness and a center to act from.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have spent years assisting photographers, and it took years for me to start getting my own work professionally. I think I am very tenacious and stubborn. I kept at it for many years until I started building my own voice. I truly love creating images. I always say if my image makes someone smile, I feel like I have accomplished something.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Time Travel Store in Echo Park, Norton Simon Museum, Griffith Park, Hollywood Bowl, The Original Farmer’s Market on 3rd st.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Joel Arquillos runs a non-profit called 826LA. He dedicates his work to helping under-resourced students of LA. He has seen me in various stages of my life/business and has always been very supportive. He is honest and not afraid of being critical (when necessary), but also great at making me laugh. His sense of humor has saved me in so many ways. I feel lucky to have him as my life partner.
