We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Knapp and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a career as an artist because I love helping bring stories and worlds to life. A lot of my favorite memories come from late night sleepovers with friends and family, playing video games or watching movies. Games, film, and music are great tools to put me in a specific time or place and help me to remember important parts of my past. I’ve been passionate about creating new things and want to help make things that inspire others and hopefully create nostalgia for future generations.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a background working in feature film and video games as a lighting artist. A lot of my career has been built on me putting myself out there and trying to put myself in the right place at the right time, and making sure I’m prepared when the time comes. I was extremely hungry to do well and soak up as much knowledge as possible when I was first starting out. I always tried to be dependable and take some of the workload off the more talented and experienced artists I worked with. Usually this led to me growing close to people who were way better than me, and develop awesome friendships. It also meant that I was able to see how they did things and try to apply it to my work. Luckily feature films and video games are very collaborative environments, and people are willing to help each other out quite a bit. There are definitely times even now, where I feel impostor syndrome, but I do my best to get over that by digging in and trying to solve problems and always work my hardest. I am very fortunate and grateful for the experiences I’ve had so far. Currently, I work as an Artist at Secret Door Games (a Dreamhaven studio), and I’m extremely fortunate to be working among some of my childhood heroes. One of our main pillars is to create games that can help do good for the world. This is something that is super important to me because video games have had such a positive impact on my life, and I want to give back and make things that can inspire others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever I have buddies come into town, I love to take them to a few places in Orange County. One place that’s local is GameCraft Brewing. It’s all video game themed, and they have a lot of cool games to play and damn good beer. I also love taking friends to Laguna beach. Hanging out at the beach during the day is fun, and there are some fun bars to go to at night. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my wife, Ashley. She has been with me on my journey since I first started learning 3D, and has been incredibly supportive the whole time. She is there for me whenever I need someone to talk to and helps get me back on course if I’m feeling down on myself. Every project I’ve worked on, I always try to get her opinion because she has an amazing artistic eye and always helps elevate my work. She has allowed me to move our whole family to different parts of the world to start new jobs and have new experiences as an artist, and has done so with a smile and love.
