We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanel & the Circus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chanel, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by my environment, mainly my friends. I live at Vocal Warehouse with about 10 other artists and seeing how they balance life and career while staying true to themselves is pretty incredible. I think being driven and dedicated often comes along with a seriousness, but they’ve taught me to be playful and collaborative! These past few months have taught me so much about the Black Lives Matter movement, which is never over. The amount of love and support at those protests is overwhelming. It shows me, and everyone I think, that community is stronger than hate and fighting for justice is the only way to bring about peace.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I do pretty much all art forms, probably because I have so many emotions hehe, but my favorite by far is music. During quarantine me and my producer ZĒO decided to make a social distanced EP from our home studios. The first single is called ‘I Wanna Do Drugs’ and as you might glean from the title, it is indeed about doing drugs. Funny thing is I actually don’t do any drugs at all, my body is really sensitive and after years of health issues, I have to take extra good care of it. That being said I have nothing against drugs, I see them put to good use with expanding people’s minds, easing pain, and just having a good ol’ time. Sometimes I just want to be part of the gang despite logic, but I wrote a song instead. It comes out August 4th everywhere, but what is time during quarantine.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Everyone should go to the ocean (and social distance). I didn’t go much before quarantine but when you’re stuck in the house all day you start to realize how healing and exhilarating nature is. If you’re down for the drive I’d recommend Malibu Lagoon State Beach. It’s a bird sanctuary as well so there’s fun information about the wildlife there and a nice walkway through the lagoon. It’s never too crowded on the beach and the water is pretty calm if you want to go for a nice swim!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out Black Women Lead. They’re a non-profit organization that believes ALL BLACK (WO)MEN matter. They’ve been running some incredible rallies and protests during this time and continue to educate and elevate no matter what. Follow @black_womenlead on instagram and see how you can get involved!
