I would say having an affirmation as an actor is extremely helpful. Since you yourself are the business, you must work equally hard to protect and nurture yourself in order to have a career in the long run. One of my personal favorites was taught to me by a college professor, on multiple occasions she would say to us: “Don’t borrow trouble from the future.” At first I didn’t think much of it, but as time passed and I began my professional career, the saying found itself echoing in my head every time I worried too much. My favorite quote was given to me by another vocalist and I use and share it regularly. It goes, “everything has been done, but not by you.” What this means is, we are all unique individuals. You could have two composers having to reimagine the same song and I guarantee both would be different. We all feel and express through music as individuals. Therefore, if a song has been done that resonates with you, never not do it. You can bring something completely fresh, new, and exciting! Do what you love and love what you do! In times of challenges this saying has gotten me through: THIS TOO SHALL PASS. When I was 19, heading into my 2nd year at UC Santa Barbara, we got devastating news that one of my brothers took his own life. He had recently turned 20, and was going through some really big life challenges.
