“You take the opportunities that present themselves to you. If there are no opportunities, you create one. You can’t knock on opportunities door and not be ready.” This is a piece of career advice that is worth repeating from time to time. I’m sure it has been repeated many times over.
But it always creates this sense of responsibility and self-reliance, encouraging all of us in the band to be proactive, adaptable, and always prepared for the possibilities that lie ahead. It helps us in recognizing and embracing opportunities that come your way, creating an opportunity when they are scarce, and being equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to take advantage of them. “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” is the constant inquiry I direct toward myself, and it is also my favorite quote of all time. This quote, from the poem “The Summer Day” by Mary Oliver, nudges me to contemplate and reflect on the purpose and quality of my life. Each morning, with this poignant inquiry, I feel compelled to seize the fleeting moments, appreciate the rarity and uniqueness of my own life as well as others’, and look for beauty and wonder around me and in the intricate details of everyday life. It is certainly a perfect panacea to mundanity, chaos, anxiety, disappointment, and dissatisfaction – the emotional state which, to our own detriment, became too common of state for too many of us living contemporary life. These beautiful words remind me that the time on earth is so precious, because it is limited; thus, to live purposefully and intentionally, to fully embrace life’s vicissitudes and challenges, as well as opportunities and aspirations with more courage, joy, creativity and, most importantly, with as much gusto as I can muster each day. I grew up with “Be Here Now” as a household staple; both in that my parents had several copies of Ram Dass’ purple book with the wicker chair floating around the house, and that they’d defer to the phrase “be here now” when I’d come to them with any sort of childhood quips or teenage angst. I used to resent the concept of ‘be here now’ for these reasons, looking for ways to rebel from my family. But I’ve come to identify that “be here now” doesn’t just mean sitting on a pillow, meditating in silence, trying to tune into the present at the expense of bypassing everything else that requires attention, but rather it means to wake up to everything we do and don’t want to see, such that we become motivated to change the here and now and bless it as a place we actually want to be. “Time and tide wait for no man” by Geoffrey Chaucer is one of my favorite quotes as it reminds me to always be present and take advantage of every moment and opportunity. “Just for today.” This is actually the first Reiki Gokai (precept) composed by Usui-sensei as a core part of Reiki teachings. As simple as it may seem, when I first learned this it resonated deeply with me. It is something I try to reflect on daily becoming almost an affirmation in my personal day-to-day life. How it was taught to me is that when we say “just for today” we bring ourselves back to the present, the here and now, reminding ourselves what is within our power within this moment. It reminds us to not only be mindfully present but it is also a reminder to be present without anger or fear of the “what if’s”. It may be ironic for me to say, as someone whose business offerings revolve around different forms of divination, but I often tell my clients that I am not fortune telling or predicting the future. We are focusing on heart centered guidance needed in the present moment to better navigate the path ahead. Ruminating on the what if’s, worrying about possibilities that had not even happened yet, was once a struggle for me. When I first learned the Reiki Gokai I had just been forced to step away from my previous 6 year long career and was preparing to undergo my first major surgery for my invisible chronic illness, Endometriosis. I was in a state of constant worry about all the possible scenarios while being uncertain of my future. So being able to tell myself “just for today” helped ground me back into myself, back into what was within my personal power in the present moment. It was as if by saying these words, I had called back my personal power & energy. Read more>>

I love the quote attributed to Mahatma Ghandi, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. This is such an important concept. By being good to others, including all living beings; the environment, and by taking care of our own well-being, we are doing so much. Someone doesn’t have to be famous or have a lot of money to create positive change, although those things can certainly help reach more people. I’m neither rich nor famous, but I’ve always strived to help others and treat others as I want to be treated. I have helped a lot of people, and embody this quote. I think our actions, which may be as simple as smiling at a stranger or giving a compliment, can create ripples of positivity. Read more>>
