We had the good fortune of connecting with Abigail Bankston and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abigail, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“If you find yourself asking yourself (and your friends), “Am I really a writer? Am I really an artist?” chances are you are. The counterfeit innovator is wildly self-confident. The real one is scared to death.” -Steven Pressfield, The War of Art: Winning the Inner Creative Battle
This quote is from my absolute favorite book which I highly recommend to all artists out there. I love this quote because it always reminds me that this fear I have inside me is mutual between all artists and I’m not alone. And that I have the ability to turn this fear into creativity. Anytime I find myself feeling bad or negative about what I’ve achieved so far in life, I pick this book up and it always motivates me to do what needs to be done. As an actress and an artist, it’s so easy to let our fears take over us and it can get in the way of creativity and work. We have to work through that fear and not allow it to get in the way of achieving our dreams. It will be hard but it’s so worth it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an actress and a singer/artist. I fell in love with acting at the age of eight and I began my career as a singer/artist when I was 20. I’ve been in the tv/movie industry for over 10 years now and let me tell you, it has not been easy. It’s an extremely tough business that has had its ups and downs but I wouldn’t want to do anything else. As an actress, you get a lot of rejection and it can be very discouraging. I’m still struggling with these challenges everyday but I love it and that’s what keeps me going. As hard as it is, being an actress is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. Whether it’s leaving an audition knowing you killed that scene or going home after a long day on set. It is one of the best feelings in the world. Music is a bit different because I have a little less experience in the music industry. But I love building a song from scratch with my brother, whose my producer. It can be very rewarding because you put your heart and soul into a song so when it’s finished, it’s a really beautiful moment. Of course I have my challenges as an artist in music and an actress. Fear is definitely one of the biggest challenges for me but sometimes you just gotta take that risk and do it anyways. I want people to relate to my work. Art is such a beautiful thing because it can make you feel so understood in really hard times. I want to be able to give that feeling to people. I want them to have relief that someone understands them. Music and movies always got me through my hard times in life. I just want to be able to give that to the world too.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles is such a unique city with so many things to do, places to go, food, etc. For food, I would definitely take them to Little Tokyo to get some ramen from Rakkan Ramen. We have some of the best asian food selection in Los Angeles so that’s a must. Sushi Yuzu in Toluca Lake or Iroha Sushi in Studio City would also be another food spot I’d take them to because if you’re in LA you must eat the sushi. Crossroads Kitchen is also so good and it’s all vegan which is a huge plus! I’m also a big dessert gal, so we’d be stopping by Milk Bar to get some bomb cake. To drink, I think Eveleigh on Sunset is a really cute spot with really great drinks. I’m still exploring the bars and restaurants for the best drinks since I’m only 22. The beach is of course the best spot to hang in town. I also love to shop down in Melrose and Echo Park area so we would definitely need a full day for that. We also have some of the best views in LA! I could really go on and on but I think everyone should just come see for themselves 🙂
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I really have to give credit to my parents! They have been a huge support in my career since I was little. I couldn’t of done any of the things I’m doing today without them! I’m extremely grateful and blessed. So thanks mom and dad!
