We had the good fortune of connecting with Abigail Elizabeth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abigail, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I would say that risk and risk taking is a very big part of my life and career. Risk management plays a vital role, just as much as it is knowing when to take a big ‘jump’ or risk.

I moved to Los Angeles 4 years ago, taking a ‘jump’ of sorts. My support system was strong back home, in Indiana; but knowing that I needed to make the jump if I truly wanted to branch out and have something of my own. Los Angeles is alive with creators and people with big ideas, theres never a shortage of that. Knowing that’s (Los Angeles) where I wanted to be, and felt like I needed to be, outweighed all of the risks coming here would bring,

Since being here, I have found a beautiful balance in risk and risk management, as well as become a part of a strong community with a passion for creating.

Yes, some times are definitely harder than others being full-time freelance, but in that, I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. Choosing to chase what I love and create everyday with new people and unique situations is something that I wouldn’t trade for the world, So to me, all of the risks are worth it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My interest in art was always there, but coming up with ways to make my art come to life in different ways over the years was a challenge, that I accepted young, I wasn’t sure how but I knew I wanted to become a photographer one way or another. I wanted to tell the stories of others, not just what lived in my mind.

After high school I joined the Army, where I suffered a spinal injury at basic training, receiving full-separation from the Military.
Thanks to the support of friends, family and an amazing team, specifically Dr. Burns, I was able to rehab and eventually regain full control and not only walk, but be almost as active as I was prior.
Afterwhich, I decided I wasn’t going to take for granted the life I have. I decided that after-all, art was my passion and always had been. I bought my camera and never looked back.

My first paid photoshoot was with a friend of mine, it really only took one person saying ‘hey lets do it, I trust you’ to give me the push to believe in myself.
Within a year I was doing photography full-time.

I dove headfirst into small shows, any tour stops I could hop on for a few days, raves and eventually led to my first festival shoot in 2019, where I ended up doing four (4) festivals before the end of the year.

I don’t have a specific moment or shoot that I am most proud of, rather that ‘the next one will be the best one’ mindset. I would say I am most proud of my work as a whole over the years, and cannot wait to make more with different people and new challenges to overcome. One thing I always say, a kind of motto, is “Keep Growing”. A reminder that there is always space for us to become better.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would start with coffee at Muddy Paw Coffee, in Silverlake, walking around all the small shops and even the flea market out there and grab lunch from one of the local spots.

A beach day is a necessity. Yes, there’s The Venice boardwalk and the iconic Santa Monica Pier, which i suggest renting a bike to get around to both easily in a day trip and plenty to do.
Although, I would take a friend a little further South to Hermosa Beach, so many local shops, some beach volleyball, pizza by the slice, and tons of bars and restaurants for dinner.

I, personally, love the underground music scene that Los Angeles has to offer.
Rock, indie, edm, rap, punk, alternative etc. you can find a show on any given night.
As well as going to the Sunset strip, The Whiskey a Go Go, The Roxy, The Viper Room you will always find good music and even better people.

A jazz night at Bacari, can only be topped by craft cocktails at The Wolves.

I would also be inclined to take a friend to the abandoned zoo in Griffith Park, explore the park a bit and have a picnic.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my friends and family that have always been there and believed in me and my pursuits. With a special shoutout to my mother, Marla. She has sacrificed so much, my entire life, to give me an incredible life regardless of any situation. To help me towards my goals and passions, no matter how big or crazy they might have sounded. In thanks to her never doubting, but helping make my dreams my own reality.
