We had the good fortune of connecting with Abimael Acosta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abimael, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in a small town in Puerto Rico, Adjuntas. Adjuntas is in the center of the island. My parents where born in Adjuntas too and they were hard working people. My Mom always supported me in every step I did to achieve my goals to be an artist when I was a kid, and my Dad taught me the importance of hard work and discipline to get whichever your dreams were. I’m the eldest of three children, and being the eldest gave me a lot of responsibilities towards my siblings and made me a more mature person for my age back then. When I finished my high school I moved to San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. Life in big cities is very different from the life I had in my small town, but my desire to achieve my dreams and the skills that I developed through my life helped me to start a career in entertainment business in Puerto Rico. My parents taught me to be independent and when I decided to move to Los Angeles to continue my career this helped me a lot. I’ve never been afraid of changes, and even though moving to Los Angeles and working in a different language would be a hard task, I adapted pretty fast to all the changes. I’m a Dad and a grandparent, and probably this would be the most difficult part of being living far from my loved ones, but I’ve learned that this is part of the sacrifices that you have to do to achieve what you want professionally and make your dreams come true.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a writer, producer and director, and for me one of the most important things of my career is the opportunity that my job gives me to touch other people lives and to in some extent help them to see themselves through my stories and characters. In all of my projects I try to put my soul in it, and it’s a compromise to me to reflect my values about social justice in my creations. Right now I’m working in a project that I love and I’m very excited about it, and it’s a sitcom with Latino characters, showing the struggles that Latinos endurance when they come to United States to make their American Dream a reality. I’ve learned that to have success you need to believe in yourself, recognize your strengthens and your flaws and work with them to make a realistic plan to achieve each of your goals. To be honest and sincere with ourselves is very important to set realistic goals.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Every time one of my friends comes to visit LA, I take them to Santa Monica Pier, go for a hike at Griffith Park and of course the Walk of Fame because most of them wants to visit the famous Walk of Fame. If they’re coming from Puerto Rico I like to take them to Venice because Venice is very different from what we’ve seen in our country and at the same time is very eclectic and beautiful.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am who I am today thanks to my family and my friends who have supported me through my life. From my family I’ve learned the importance of hard work and discipline and from my friends I’ve learned that I don’t have to impress them or no one, because the most important thing in me is to be happy for who I am, and that my career is what I love to do for living, but the most important thing is to continue to be a good human being and to not lose my path in life and my truth essence.
