Meet Abner Lozano | Actor, Writer and Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Abner Lozano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abner, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
It’s an interesting phenomenon and you kind of hear it all of the time. It almost becomes a cliche that you hear but some people rarely take action. And I think that’s what it’s all about. I was fortunate enough to realize early in my career that you can’t expect to do the same things over and over and expect different results. That’s when you take massive action that you haven’t done before which can potentially take you in the direction you want to go. Sometimes it does and most of the time it doesn’t. But it’s that grey area of results that make all of the difference and it only takes discipline to get there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Coming from Stockton, CA…acting doesn’t exist out there. Let alone the idea of becoming one was absurd. I was ashamed for a long time being from there but as I got older I came to own it and really be proud of being the only actor to ever come from Stockton. It’s known for its grotesque violence and growing up around that, it gave me an edge and uniqueness which have led me to want to write and produce my own stories. It’s not only a want but a need to tell these stories that focus on the underdog characters and their trauma, brilliance, humor, tragedies and love they once had or have. It’s really important for me to also rep my people, you know? But this time, it’s dimensional and diving deep into what led to their decisions as opposed to just focusing on their negatives.
I’m also excited to get started on other projects outside of that—romcoms, mystery thrillers…etc just stores that are worthwhile and that hopefully move the audience to new levels of thinking and understanding. For me, it’s not getting to set and just saying words on an emotional basic surface. I really love digging deep into what these words mean to the core and what they mean to me. And living in that life and person as deep and as long as possible. There’s something that happens when I do that and it really transcends through the lens.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This makes me laugh! I’ve had friends from back home visit me throughout the years and they all want to see the Hollywood sign and the blvd. So, I take them and they love it. We have also gone on the lime scooters and just ride at 1am. Just great vibes! But in terms of the best places…sheesh there’s so many! I’d have to go with the beach man. They’re the best in So-Cal.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Justin Chu Carry. Amazing Actor and even more wonderful human being. I had just moved to Los Angeles and he agreed to meet with me in a small coffee shop in Santa Monica and we talked for hours. He became my mentor and good friend after that but you know, he didn’t have to do that. Not at all. And I’ll always be grateful for that! His generosity, kindness and mentorship has given me the confidence to keep going in this crazy industry.
