We had the good fortune of connecting with Adabelle Tan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adabelle, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I come from Singapore, a small island in South East Asia with a budding art scene that was developing slowly while I was growing up. It wasn’t easy to find opportunities to pursue my passion for the arts within my home country, so I had to look abroad for more avenues to explore.

During my time in primary and secondary school, I actively joined the robotics club and IT club. It was during this time that my father sparked my interest in technology – He supported me and even got me my first drawing tablet for my 13th birthday, which introduced me to the world of digital art and the exciting possibilities of combining technology and art!

My parents have been instrumental in shaping my work ethic by leading through their own examples. While initially they had concerns about the stability of a career in the arts, they witnessed how much joy and fulfillment art brought into my life. They saw my determination and relentless pursuit of my passion, which eventually won them over. From that point on, they became my biggest supporters, offering wholehearted encouragement and backing me in my artistic endeavors. Their change of heart and unwavering support have meant the world to me and have played a significant role in my journey as an artist.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artistic journey has been far from smooth. When I moved to the United States to pursue my education and career in art, leaving behind my loved ones and familiar surroundings, I encountered unexpected challenges. For example, the sense of safety I took for granted back home was replaced by a realization of the dangers that came with being alone in a new country. Moreover, being a person of color with a different cultural background meant I had to confront insecurities and embrace my differentness. It took time, but I have learned to express myself authentically, without suppressing my identity to fit in.

Currently, I hold the position of Director of Design at Black Math, specializing in art direction, design, and illustration for motion. My work stands out for its cleanliness, vibrant color palette, and attention to detail. What I’m most proud of is being the first person of color to rise into a leadership position in my company. This milestone allows me to effect positive change, supporting and empowering the artists I work with. I strongly believe in providing a voice to everyone, regardless of their personality traits or introversion, as I have personally experienced being overlooked and unheard.

I am particularly excited about collaborating on editorial illustrations related to food, animals, or education. If you’re interested in working together, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via email. Additionally, I have prints and other merchandise featuring my artwork available on INPRNT, with a significant portion of the sales profits going to selected non-profit organizations.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I highly recommend visiting Boston/MA in the fall, as it is an exceptionally beautiful time of year. The city comes alive with vibrant autumn colors and there are plenty of activities to enjoy.
Boston is renowned for its seafood, so I would definitely take them to Neptune Oyster. They serve a selection of fresh oysters, delectable fried clams, and mouthwatering johnnycakes, which are delightful pancakes soaked in honey butter syrup topped with caviar. Another must-visit spot is Yankee Lobster, where they can savor a hot lobster roll and indulge in creamy lobster bisque. For classic clam chowder, I would suggest Faneuil Hall or the North End!

To take in the picturesque surroundings, we can take a leisurely walk through Mount Auburn Cemetery. It’s a stunning place, although we might need to be cautious of the wild turkeys that roam the area! If we’re up for a hiking adventure, there are several reservations just a short drive or train ride away.

We can also cycle, skate, or stroll along the Charles Esplanade Riverside, go kayaking in the river or walk along the Boston Harborwalk and Seaport area. A visit to the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) would also be a fantastic way to appreciate art and enjoy the harbor views.

Apple or pumpkin picking in Andover is another great fall activity. We can relish the delicious apple cider donuts and sip on refreshing apple cider while surrounded by the beauty of the orchards.

As a bonus, I would love to bring them to my office in Chinatown for a quick tour. It’s a beautiful space that I’m proud to work at, and it would give them a glimpse into the vibrant neighborhood and my daily life. 🙂

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to the following individuals and groups who have played a role in shaping my journey:

First and foremost, my father, who ignited my passion for technology, taught me resilience in the face of challenges, and instilled in me the value of continuous learning.

My mother, who has been my biggest supporter, providing endless emotional support throughout my journey.

My brother, for introducing me to the music and art of Linkin Park, which became a profound source of inspiration during my early creative years.

Lee Anne, my best friend and an exceptional artist, whose talent and compassion constantly inspire me to care deeply.

The lecturers at Nanyang Polytechnic, who introduced me to the world of motion graphics and animation, instilling a strong foundation and pushing me to work hard and improve.

The professors at Savannah College of Art & Design, who equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the industry.

My coworkers and friends at Black Math, who inspire me every day with their diverse talents and contribute to my growth as a leader and artist.

And last but not least, Jeremy S, my mentor, who believed in me and my potential even when I doubted myself.

Their guidance and support have been invaluable on my artistic journey. :’)
