We had the good fortune of connecting with adam chuck and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi adam, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
as my work gained popularity online and I was making sales regularly, it seemed like a great thing to be able to just sell my work and not have to worry about a day job or working for someone else. I don’t mind having a day job ever, but I value my time and I need a lot of it for my creative process.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I primarily work these days with oil paint on reflective mylar at a small scale. I came to the material sharing a studio with a friend. she had sheets of mylar, and while I was working and watching our space I started painting photos in my phone saved from tumblr or photos sent to me from people. my idea has been to capture our queer digital existence as we display ourselves online—everyone takes the perfect selfie or aesthetic nude/home photo for various social media or other apps, and many of the compositions are lovely. so i’ve taken to elevate these digital moments to fine art by presenting them in oil paint at an intimate scale.
i’ve been lucky to make many connections working through social media (instagram primarily) and have showed work in galleries around the world, and also connected with many clients and new friends who love and appreciate my work.
i’ve always tried to stay humble on my journey and let my work speak for itself. aside from being in the ocean or anywhere in nature with my dog, painting is my biggest passion and I just keep making.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
friends know I am a nature person and beach goer, so if you’re visiting me in new york, we will probably visit the beach, or at least explore parks depending on the season. I love going out to jacob riis park, the queer beach is one of my favorite places—I always run into friends and everyone is just having a good time. I also love fort tilden beach a little further down—it’s more secluded and natural and just really pretty.
I live by prospect park now so that’s another place i love to explore with friends. during the pandemic I started biking in the city, so I love going on long rides and would take friends around brooklyn, along jamaica bay, over the bridges into manhattan, and many other places.
I honestly don’t go out a terrible lot to eat or party, but I do love getting a bite at all night skate in bedstuy with one of their frozen pain killers. there’s some really good food on franklin ave in crown heights, and then williamsburg has many of the bars and queer clubs i’ve frequented. the rosemont was always a go to, it’s a different generation there it feels now, but I still enjoy a visit, along with three dollar bill not too far away.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
my best friend Alaina who followed her dream and worked hard to make her own business making and selling delicious foods for people in her community
