Meet Adam Lowenstein | Headache Surgeon

We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Lowenstein and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adam, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I created my migraine surgery practice because I saw a gap—both in understanding and in treatment—for people suffering from chronic headaches. As a surgeon, I’ve always been drawn to problems that are fixable with precision and structure, and when I discovered the field of peripheral nerve decompression, something clicked. These weren’t vague or mysterious cases. In many of these patients, there was a clear anatomical issue causing their pain—compressed nerves that could be surgically addressed.
I had treated so many patients whose lives were derailed by constant pain—people who had tried everything from medications to injections to alternative therapies, often without real relief. What struck me was how often they were told to just live with it, or that it was all in their head. That dismissal didn’t sit right with me. Once I saw the difference this surgery could make—the way patients could go from incapacitated to functional, sometimes even pain-free—it became impossible not to lean into this work.
And to be honest, it’s personal. I’ve had migraines myself. I know what they can take from you, and I also know what it means to get your life back. Building a dedicated practice was my way of doing something about it. Not just offering surgery, but offering hope—grounded in anatomy, science, and results—for people who’ve been told they’re out of options.

What should our readers know about your business?
At my migraine surgery center, patient education is at the heart of everything we do. I make it a priority—along with my team—to clearly explain each patient’s treatment options so they feel informed, empowered, and supported in every step of their care. Our goal is to ensure that anyone suffering from chronic headaches or migraines has access to the information they need to make the best decision for their health.
This practice was born from both my professional dedication and my personal experience with migraines. As a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 15 years of experience, I’ve focused much of my career on advancing the field of nerve decompression surgery for headaches. I trained with some of the foremost experts in the world to bring leading-edge care to patients who, like me, know how disruptive chronic migraines can be.
I personally designed our Santa Barbara office and on-site surgical center from the ground up with patient comfort and safety in mind. From our calming pre-op areas to private recovery rooms tailored specifically for headache surgery patients, every element was created to reduce stress and promote healing. I also hand-selected each member of our team for their expertise, warmth, and commitment to patient care.
Because of the growing demand for this specialized approach to headache relief, I’ve expanded our services to include offices in Santa Monica and Denver, making care more accessible to patients in both Los Angeles and Colorado.
From start to finish, our centers are designed to deliver a higher standard—not just in surgical outcomes, but in the overall patient experience.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My home, work, and family are all in Santa Barbara, and I have the privilege of living and practicing in this wonderful place.
Some of my favorite spots in Santa Barbara really reflect why I love this city so much. Butterfly Beach is probably at the top of the list—it’s peaceful, never too crowded, and the sunsets there are unreal. I also spend a lot of time in the Funk Zone. It’s got this great energy, with art, wine tasting rooms, and some of the best food in town. It’s a fun area to wander, especially when I have friends visiting.
When I want a change of pace, I head up to Cold Spring Tavern. It’s a little outside of town, tucked into the mountains, but it feels like stepping back in time. The food’s great, and there’s always a cool mix of locals and travelers. For hiking, Inspiration Point is hard to beat. It’s a short climb with a big payoff—the view over Santa Barbara and the coastline is always worth it.
I’ve also always loved the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. It might sound like an odd favorite, but the architecture is beautiful and the view from the clock tower is incredible. It’s one of those places that locals sometimes forget to appreciate. Same with Franceschi Park—it’s quiet, often empty, and the views are some of the best in the city. If I’m looking for a calm moment, that’s where I go.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Becoming a migraine headache surgeon takes many years of training and many many many mentors. My teachers from high school to college to medical school to general surgery to plastic surgery have all helped get me to where I am and I’m thankful for each and every one of them.
