Meet Adam Monaghan | Co-Founder, Succulent Coffee Roasters

We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Monaghan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adam, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.”
This one reminds me to simply slow down. As a business owner I wear so many different hats, often zig-zagging around a disparate landscape of topics from buying green coffee to writing marketing copy to overseeing a cafe buildout to you name it. I sometimes find myself going a mile a minute to accomplish everything I can, as fast as I can, to move on to the next item on my checklist. The result, if I don’t check myself, is that I make myself and my team crazy. I also make mistakes that cost more time and resources than if I had just gone slowly in the first place. If I remember to slow down, to take time to thoughtfully work through a task, the result will be a more present and connected me, which actually results in being able to get more done, faster.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Succulent Coffee Roasters is a specialty coffee roasting company from Southern California. We help people drink delicious coffee they can feel good about. Our customers enjoy a luxury coffee experience at home through subscriptions to our premium coffee or in person at our cafe in Newport Beach. We’re opening new locations in Laguna Beach (April) and Huntington Beach (June) soon! Our coffee is served to thousands of happy customers via our wholesale clients in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. In addition, we give $2 of every bag purchased through our subscription service to The Chain Collaborative, a non-profit that works with local leaders in coffee growing regions to foster development of their farming enterprises.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The honest truth is that I’m a homebody with a two and a half year old daughter, so when friends come to town we are spending lots of family time at home and doing kid-friendly activities close to home in Santa Monica. Outdoor time is key: surfing and hanging at the beach in Ocean Park, hikes at Will Rodgers State Park, and picnics at public parks with playgrounds. We’d have to hit up some local coffee shops: Love Coffee in Ocean Park, Bodega (which turns into a wine bar at night), and Cafe Ruisseau, which is owned by my friend Edward Ackah-Miezah. A good food tour definitely includes breakfast at Gjusta in Venice; burgers and beers at Stout in downtown Santa Monica; a new favorite, Ospi in Venice, for Italian; Blue Plate Taco, also downtown Santa Monica, for California Mexican food and margaritas; and Wanderlust in Venice for the most incredible ice cream I’ve ever had.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
That’s easy: my wife. If I didn’t have her full support, I wouldn’t have been able to take the risk to start Succulent Coffee Roasters. I left a relatively easy, high paying job to make basically no money and work all the time. Without her ability to provide for our family financially, there is no way I could have taken the risk to start a business. But even more importantly, she is my biggest fan and she truly believes that Succulent Coffee Roasters is going to be a success.
