Meet Adassa Ramirez | Poet, Small Business Owner & Teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Adassa Ramirez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adassa, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want my legacy to be my character and for people to remember me as someone loyal who was loving and had an unbreakable bond with my family and close friends. I also want people to remember me as a good listener, who was kind-hearted, resilient, a fighter and conscientious with a big sense of humor who wanted to make a positive impact in the world.
What should our readers know about your business?
MicMas ReMiX began when I became a mom. I decided to return back to my roots with a “big chop” and stopped putting relaxers in my hair. It was a relearning my natural hair which made me conscientious of the products I had been using. I started using natural ingredients like coconut oil, olive oil, mango butter, etc. and started seeing results with the health and growth of my hair. My friends and family started noticing the difference, as well, and asked me to make them bottles of my oil formulation for them. They loved the results they were seeing in their own hair and this encouraged me to start a small business selling my hair recipes in a bottle.
It was not an easy process because it was one that I had to maneuver through on my own without a mentor. I learned some lessons the hard way, for example, giving away a lot of free products in the hopes that it would attract attention to find customers. Having a small business in an oversaturated hair care market makes for a lot of challenges but I was able to carve a niche for myself as an Afro-Latina sharing the message with Latinas that “todo pelo es pelo bueno” which translates to all hair is good hair because texture doesn’t determine if hair is good or bad.
Within a year of starting my small business, major publications such as Essence, Oprah, InStyle, People En Español, Teen Vogue and Elle started writing not only about MicMas ReMiX products but also about my purpose as an Afro-Latina dismantling the pelo malo mindset. This helped tremendously with bringing a lot of exposure to my small business. It also allowed me to pay it forward by beginning to use a portion of the profits for charitable causes that are close to my heart in Puerto Rico.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Showing my best friends a great time would mean it’s a must for us to attend a bomba event celebrating African dance and music that is part of the Puerto Rican culture. Next we would have an amazing dinner of Caribbean food – whether it be West Indian or a Latin spot. Then we couldn’t end the night without going either to a lounge or salsa/merengue night working off all that delicious food we just ate getting our dance on.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to SHOUTOUT my sons, who are the inspiration behind my organic and vegan haircare business, MicMas ReMiX. Also, my girlfriends, Ivette, Mishki, and Vanessa, who are my soul sisters and the greatest cheerleaders one could ask for.
