Meet Adelheid Waumboldt | President

We had the good fortune of connecting with Adelheid Waumboldt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adelheid, how do you think about risk?
In my life, the most beautiful discoveries, innovations, adventures and memories have come from risks I’ve taken. The other side of that coin, is that I’ve made life-altering mistakes from risks as well. I find that a risk needs to be calculated: are there more benefits than deficits that will likely occur from this risk? Am I the only one who this decision will affect, or will anyone else either benefit/suffer from this decision? If a risky decision could harm someone else’s life or livelihood I would caution strongly against that. In this world, good intentions are met with good fortune and so anything done with positive motivation and in a spirit of helping will be met with an equally uplifting result. Secondly, knowledge often erases or significantly reduces risk. The more you know of any given topic, the more likely you are to make an informed decision. Risk comes in with whatever is the unknown, so it is important to make as educated-as-possible estimates on the effect of whatever comes to cause. I have been teased by colleagues for spending ridiculous amounts of time in the library, and certain restaurant owners in the cities I’ve lived in can tell you that I’ve spent all of my “free nights” with a pile of books, tucked into a corner, trying to learn as much as possible. For any person in pursuit of anything, do not be afraid of what you do not know – there have been so many great men and women before us, who for thousands of years have documented knowledge in the pages of unlimited books in any discipline you want to make your own. It is right there for us to find and study, and in our great country, libraries are free and open for everyone to use. There is something very spiritual about this fact to me; that if you want to reduce your risk, you can learn and make an informed decision and the outcome will be deserving of the effort you have applied. For a final thought about risk, I left the United States on September 9th to visit Turks and Caicos Islands for a week after experiencing the death of a loved one, and emotional chaos due to the national turmoil in our country. I needed a break. Perhaps it was a risk to begin with – everyone cautioned me that it was hurricane season, that Covid 19 would surely find me on an airplane, and that it was just, “not a good time to travel.” Today, it is October 23rd – over two months later – and I am still in Turks and Caicos with my seven year old son, and while we are scheduled to return home in a few weeks, my heart is alive and well in this beautiful place with beautiful people who are full of light and love, and mostly – God. I am in the middle of a big risk, and I am on the edge of a potentially very risky decision. For this one, though, I cannot read the outcome in a book, I must trust in myself and in God to lead me on the right path. Roman statesman Marcus Cicero said, “A man of courage is also full of faith.” You must believe to achieve.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love visiting the LA Opera – and I hear that the reopening date is November 14th. I cannot wait to sit in an opera house again. Some of my favorite restaurants are Otium (it’s incredible,) Bestia, Spago, and Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Aire. Since I live in Pasadena my local favorites are Radhika Modern Indian in South Pasadena, Flemmings, Fish Wives … clearly I like to eat. There are some great hikes in my area at Sturtevant Falls Hiking Trailhead which leads to a really beautiful waterfall. Monrovia Falls is also a great hike, The Glendale Central public library is by far my favorite library in the city. Glendale is a beautiful place outside Los Angeles and you can tell that the citizens of Glendale really love the place they live. It is clean and well maintained, with great public assets like the library which they are obviously supporting financially. For botanical gardens, of course, The Huntington Library and Descanso Gardens. My son’s favorite place is the Science Museum which has a great selection of rocket ships and we were even lucky to catch King Tutankhamen’s treasure exhibition there when it came to town.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wish I could name all of the people who I’ve learned from in my life, because I find that every day I am impressed with people around me, with knowledge that I have not yet acquired. You can truly learn something from everyone. Of course, my mother, who was a single working mom, taught me life lessons that shaped the fabric of who I am. She was tough and extremely bright. I am so grateful to her. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents when I was little. We lived together in one house, and this was before cell phones and DVRs, before computers. There were a lot of shared meals, shared responsibilities, long conversations, and focused time on learning the little things. I am so grateful to my grandparents, and for being born in that great time. I have a best friend who serves as my sounding board, my partner in all decisions, and my peace. This person means the world to me. My seven year old son is the truest blessing in my life. It is because of him that I crave success and endeavor to fulfill my ambitions. It is because of him that I so badly want to uphold strong moral values and serve as a good example. He truly has brought out the best in me. I cannot stress enough how generally grateful I am for all moments which have happened in my life and all of the people I’ve met. We are each a product of our life experiences, and it is up to us to choose to turn each life lesson into a success and a gift.
Thank you.
