Meet Adriaan Philipse | Trailer Composer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Adriaan Philipse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adriaan, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
My definition of succes would be: Helping people with what I love to do, and learn from each experience and improve from it every time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My name is Adriaan Philipse, I’m originally from the Netherlands and I’m a composer for trailers. What I especially love to do, is making custom music, or customize existing music specifically tailored for the trailer. For example I made a customized cover of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Dance Sugar Plum Fairy’ for the first trailer of Babygirl. I asked myself, how can I make this famous classical ballet piece fit the style and the feel of the film. Along the way I experimented, and I came to adding percussion rhythms, to bring out the tension dynamic of the two main characters. I was really excited about this project, and I’m so happy how it turned out!
I learn from every piece of work that I do, because everytime it’s a different situation that needs a different creative solution to get to an end result. It is fun to be challanged in new ways, and it allows me to try out new approaches that I wouldn’t have thought of before. I find it really important to keep learning.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For food my favourite place to have breakfast is at Porto’s. I’m there every morning to get my breakfast wrap. And I also really like the chicken plate that they have. For lunch or dinner I really love ‘BCD Tofu House’ for Kbbq. I like all the small plates that come with the combo dish. And the Bbq and the kimchi soup that comes with it are delicious. For hikes I like the Fryman Canyon trail and also ofcourse Griffith Park.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to do a shout out to my good friend Martin Wave! He inspired me to get into the trailer composing world, and he has given me lots of advice over the years. Thanks Martin!
