We had the good fortune of connecting with Aggie Nichols and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aggie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
It’s probably creativity and communication skills. This is what my clients mention the most often and I think they appreciate how easy it is to talk to me and exchange ideas. I believe that great images are created through collaboration, so I involve my clients in the process as much as I can. They love to know what is going on and contribute to the final look and I love to share that with them, so it’s a win-win. Without great communication skills, it would be impossible to translate an idea into a tangible asset. Creativity is just as important. After all, we are trying to create an image that will catch the customer’s attention and stop them from scrolling – it needs to be unique. Creativity helps me figure out which resources I should use in order to make the image stand out, whether it is the use of light, shadows, props, composition, colors, editing… the possibilities are endless.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Before I began working as a photographer, I worked as an audio engineer for nearly 8 years and a musician for another 5. Having a curious mind made me pursue many different careers and interests. Even though I’ve had a camera on me since I was a kid and pursuing photography crossed my mind multiple times back then, somehow life decided to take me on a different journey and I am so glad it did. I’ve acquired so many different skill sets that are now proving to be extremely useful, that if I had landed in this field a decade ago, it would have been so much harder. My college degrees have little to do with photography, but so much to do with running a business, marketing, advertising, creativity, and science. I’m proud of this unique skill set and experience. I love what I do and I always strive to provide the best work no matter if I’m taking an e-commerce photo of a household item or if I’m shooting a whole set of creative images for a beauty or skincare brand. As long as the images help a brand, they all are equally significant.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This city has so much to offer! I’m a fan of active traveling, so I’d recommend a fun exhibit or event rather than a walk around a landmark. My go-to spots in the city are: Dreamscape (super fun VR experience in Century City), Lost Spirits Distillery (which is coming back to LA soon!), Funky Sole Night at The Echo, The Grove/Farmers Market, LACMA, Sender One at LAX (a fun climbing gym experience), Tu Madre in WeHo, Tatsu Ramen, Arts District Brewing, Oui Melrose, Electric Karma, Perch LA, cliffs at Palos Verdes, one of the many hikes in Altadena or Angeles Crest Forest… I think with the LA traffic, they’d only be able to do 3 of those things, but at least there’s a lot to choose from!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family deserves a shout-out for sure. I was lucky to be raised surrounded by both art and science and I believe that it has largely contributed to the way I perceive photography now. When it comes to learning the technical side of photography, I definitely owe this part to a large online community of photographers, retouchers, and designers, who are willing to share their knowledge online. I’m self-taught and I appreciate and admire these people so much! Next are my lovely clients, who have trusted my creative process. Seeing brands evolve and gain customers while using the images that we created makes me very happy and grateful! Last but not least, a shout-out to my husband, who has been supportive of anything I had pursued and who endures my (sometimes odd) working hours.
