We had the good fortune of connecting with Ahana Ghosh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ahana, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Chicago but was raised in Kolkata, India. I have been a resident of Kolkata for almost 20 years of my life.I believe that my city has shaped the person I have become today. As with every other Bengali child, I was taught classical dance, music, and painting, and most importantly, I was exposed to good films. I wanted to be a Scientist until the day I was introduced to the art form known as Cinema by my father.. Since a very young age,
films have piqued my interest. I was intrigued by the concept of shooting each frame separately and
then assembling them to create something with the potential to influence its audience. I have grown
up watching films such as ‘Psycho’ and ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’ by Alfred Hitchcock,
‘Schindler’s List’, and ‘Lincoln’ by Steven Spielberg, and most importantly ‘Apu Trilogy’ and
‘Feluda’ by Satyajit Ray. These are the kind of movies that have moulded me into who I am today.
The very thought that we have the power to create something that can transport the audience into a
different state of mind, making them feel multiple emotions within a limited period, motivates me
to put my hundred percent into the world of filmmaking.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Cinematographer and have always aspired to be one since I was fifteen years old. Since the day I learned what the word means, I knew this is what I would want to pursue in the future. I have
never had second thoughts regarding this decision. The experiences that I have faced, or the culture that I come from, the place where I have been raised plays a very crucial part in who I am today I follow emotions rather than logic in a story. This is what I feel sets me apart from others. The journey was definitely not easy but it was memorable indeed. Throughout the process, I have learnt the importance of leadership, teamwork, patience and collaboration.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s difficult to pick just one thing or person to thank for who I’ve become. Films like Satyajit Ray’s ‘Apu Trilogy’ and Steven Spielberg’s ‘Schindler’s List’ sparked my love for cinema. Half of the credit goes to my parents who watched movies with me every night, even when they were tired, and bought me DVDs every weekend when I was in school. My childhood friends were always supportive of my dream to beof becoming a Cinematographer. Moving from studying film in India to the USA was eye-opening, but studying at New York Film Academy was amazing with all the different equipment and new people whom I met. That’s when I decided to do a Masters Degree in Cinematography. Along the way, my professors, classmates, and everyone I’ve met in the film world have taught me so much.
