We had the good fortune of connecting with Ahseem Rish and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ahseem, how do you think about risk?
I am definitely risk aversive, but high risk, high rewards. I believe if you take calculated risk is the best choice. I believe our society and school system doesn’t teach people how to think in order to take proper risk and we teach them to be scared of failure rather than use failure as a criteria for risk/success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the things that I am most proud about is my book, “Pieces of a Black Boy.” I think the title and the book speaks for itself. It’s a book detailing how it feels to live in America as a black male, and if you want to understand a black man, start with a black boy. Diversity is one of the major contributor to my success, being Afro-Latino and well-informed allowed me to pursue things to the best of my ability. Nevertheless, the main struggle was growing up poor in a single parent household, in the inner city of an immigrant. Easy was never a vocabulary in my life. To overcome the challenges of life is hard. I believe life always produces new challenges, but sticking to your core-beliefs allows you to overcome them. One lesson that I’ve learned is to plan. Growing up in the inner-city, I come from a community that doesn’t have the luxury to plan. They live in survival mode just trying to get through the day. I want the world to know that my brand includes things getting better; I am definitely a humanitarian in my own way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To be bougie, I’ll definitely take them north of the ten freeway. Nevertheless, all the good food spots are in the hood. I would definitely hit up Tracey’s or Little Belize for some ox-tails and tamales. But for drinks definitely Dtla or Culver city, depending on how “risque” I feel.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God, growing up christian and having religion to back me is the best strength. During hard times your faith is all that one has; and that is what helps pull people through hard times. In a society where we are moving away from christian theology, I believe there are still many useful things that Christ has to offer.
