Meet Aja Cohen | CEO & Founder, Transcendent Active

We had the good fortune of connecting with Aja Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aja, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After my third baby arrived, I found myself unexpectedly parting ways with my fast fashion job. Oddly enough, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, giving me the chance to reassess my path ahead. Consulting with a career advisor, they urged me to consider something impactful for my “community.” It was during a soul-stirring hike in Acadia National Park, Maine, that I had an epiphany: I belonged to not just one, but two communities. As a certified yoga instructor, I was deeply rooted in my yoga community, but I also cherished my ties to my religious Jewish community. Both groups faced distinct challenges that fashion design could address.
With guidance from a mentor, I crystallized my vision and birthed the concept for my brand, Transcendent Active.
Transcendent Active’s mission is twofold: to craft stylish modest activewear that empowers individuals and to champion environmental responsibility. We achieve this by using recycled polyester, sourced from discarded plastic water bottles. By repurposing this material, we give new life to waste that would otherwise clog landfills. Moreover, our commitment to ethical sourcing and our endorsement by BLUESIGN ensure that our practices prioritize both people and the planet.
More than just a clothing line, Transcendent Active is a sisterhood of women united by a shared quest for spiritual growth and social impact. Our designs are crafted to celebrate your inner radiance while honoring your spiritual convictions. Though labeled as activewear, our garments transcend mere exercise attire. They’re tailor-made for the multitasking woman, whether she’s chasing after kids, glamming up for a night out, attending a meeting, or conquering a marathon.
Our diverse range of clothing options caters to women of all sizes, shapes, colors, and faiths, embodying our belief in inclusivity and empowerment. Join us as we journey towards self-discovery, community, and positive change—one chic outfit at a time.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Transcendent Active isn’t just another activewear brand—it’s a beacon of eco-conscious style and sustainability in the fashion world. My journey from working with industry giants like Champion and Fila to becoming a certified yoga instructor illuminated the dark side of fast fashion and fueled my passion for wellness and mindfulness. Blending these passions with my deep-rooted faith, I birthed Transcendent Active.
The onset of the Covid pandemic served as a catalyst, propelling me to take a leap of faith and launch my own eco-friendly activewear line. After overcoming numerous hurdles, Transcendent Active made its debut on August 13, 2020, with the All Day Active skirt, which quickly flew off the shelves thanks to the overwhelming support of our community.
At Transcendent Active, we stand firm in our values, firmly believing that style and quality can coexist with ethical fashion practices. Our brand isn’t just about clothing; it’s a sisterhood of women striving to connect with their higher selves and make a positive impact on the world. By embracing our eco-conscious athleisure, individuals not only look good but also feel good about their contribution to environmental sustainability.
Central to our mission is our unwavering commitment to sustainability. We utilize recycled polyester (rPET) and Deadstock fabric to craft our activewear, ensuring that our products leave a minimal ecological footprint. Moreover, our partnership with BLUESIGN Approved fabric mills guarantees responsible and sustainable manufacturing practices.
But our dedication to sustainability doesn’t end there. We’ve prioritized sustainable packaging in partnership with EcoEnclose, utilizing 100% recycled materials and eco-friendly inks for our poly mailer bags and notecards. Even our tissue paper and stickers are made from post-consumer waste, reflecting our commitment to reducing waste at every turn.
Transcendent Active isn’t just a brand; it’s a movement—a fusion of fashion, sustainability, and mindfulness. We provide chic, sustainable, and modest activewear options while championing ethical manufacturing practices and environmental stewardship. Join us as we redefine activewear and inspire positive change, one stylish stride at a time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Although I call New Jersey home, my frequent visits to Los Angeles have woven a deep connection with the city into my heart—I almost feel like a native! Whenever my best friend comes to LA, I eagerly take them on a tour of my cherished spots, each holding a special place in my LA experience.
First on the itinerary is a visit to the factory where Transcendent Active brings our designs to life. Walking amidst rolls of fabric and witnessing our products taking shape fills me with pride. Meeting the dedicated individuals behind the scenes, who have become like family to me, adds a personal touch to the experience. While it may technically be work-related, visiting the factory has become a highlight of my LA trips, serving as a reminder of the journey and gratitude for the opportunity to create.
When it’s time to indulge our taste buds, we make a beeline for Jurassic Magic Coffee and Fish Grill in Malibu. Stepping into Jurassic Magic Coffee feels like entering a whimsical wonderland, with its quirky decor and delightful specialty drinks. And the ocean view from Fish Grill pairs perfectly with their fresh, delectable seafood dishes—I simply can’t get enough!
For sightseeing, Mid City never fails to captivate with its vibrant tapestry of culture, art, and entertainment. The mere thought of strolling through its streets ignites my excitement! And no LA visit is complete without a stop at the Culver City Farmers Market, where the bounty of fresh produce and local goods beckons. It’s a treasure trove of culinary delights and community spirit, always leaving me inspired and invigorated.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m thrilled to give a heartfelt shoutout to my family, who are my rock and my inspiration. First and foremost, my amazing husband, Evan Cohen, and our beautiful children, Raina, Shua, and Levi. And, of course, a big shoutout to my parents, Bill and Edie Calvitti, whose unwavering support has made all of this possible!
I also want to express my gratitude to my dear friend, business mentor, and coach, Sacsha Flowers. If it weren’t for her lighting a fire under me, I might still be stuck in the fast fashion grind. Thanks to her encouragement, I’m on a whole new path, and I couldn’t be happier!
