Meet Akira Tashi | Screenwriting & Script Supervising Yogi

We had the good fortune of connecting with Akira Tashi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Akira, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I come from Los Angeles, California, where I was born and raised by my grandmother, alongside my sister and brother. My grandmother had a profound impact on shaping who I am today. She was a strong, bold, and fearless woman who hailed from the South. Her influence on me was significant.
One of the most important lessons my grandmother imparted was the importance of speaking one’s mind while maintaining respect for others. She instilled in us the value of self-respect and not allowing anyone to disrespect us. Her wisdom taught me to have a kind and brave heart, always communicating clearly so there was never any doubt about my feelings or words. Integrity was key – she emphasized the importance of keeping my word and ensuring that my actions aligned with my promises.
My grandmother’s mantra, “You can be anything you want to be in this lifetime. So, if it calls for you, answer,” encouraged me to pursue my dreams and ambitions fearlessly. She was ahead of her time, accepting of same-sex relationships, and open to diverse friendships, as long as they treated me well.
I also attended a private Catholic all-girls school, a choice made by my grandmother to encourage us to define our beliefs and values independently, away from societal influences. This upbringing equipped me with strong communication skills and a commitment to staying true to myself. I learned to stand up not only for myself but also for those who might not have had the ability to stand up for themselves.
Today, I live my life to the fullest, embodying confidence, strength, and fearlessness. My grandmother’s influence has shaped me into a person who embraces authenticity, values communication, and advocates for justice and respect, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or background.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart as an artist is my unwavering tenacity and my determination to keep pushing forward, no matter the obstacles in my path. I believe that my ability to focus on finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems is a rare quality. While many might complain or give up when faced with challenges, that has never been an option for me. I was raised with the mindset that giving up is not an option, and I’ve carried that determination with me throughout my career.
My journey as an artist began with writing, which served as a therapeutic outlet for me after a traumatic experience in my childhood. Writing gave me a voice when I felt unable to speak. I started by creating skits for neighborhood kids and organizing shows for our parents, making flyers and inviting them to watch. This early passion for storytelling led me to The Al Fann Theatrical Ensemble, where I landed multiple commercials and roles in television shows. I later enrolled in the Alexia Robinson Acting school and appeared in various independent films.
My educational journey also played a pivotal role in my development as an artist. I earned a B.S. in Psychology from UCLA and eventually found my way to The Los Angeles Film School. While I initially entered the Directing Program, it soon became clear that my true calling was in writing, evidenced by my ability to complete scripts overnight.
The path to where I am today professionally was not easy, but it was my resilience and willingness to speak up for myself that helped me overcome the challenges. In an industry where women’s voices are often overlooked, I learned the importance of being bold and unapologetic, even if it meant being labeled as the “bitch.” I realized that I needed to assert myself and not let anyone undermine my position.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way include the recognition that every job comes with its ups and downs, and it’s up to me to navigate through them and maintain control of my own path.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that my stories are dark yet humorous, realistic, and deep. My scripts are bold and unapologetic, and they stand as their own unique entity in the world of storytelling. I strive to bring authenticity and a fresh perspective to my work, challenging conventions and pushing boundaries in my storytelling. ![]()

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to several individuals and groups who have played a crucial role in my life and have been instrumental in shaping who I am today.
First and foremost, my siblings have been my unwavering support system. They have been there for me through thick and thin, allowing me to pursue my dreams by supporting me both emotionally and practically. My sister’s generosity in providing me with a car, a metro pass, and whatever I needed during my film school years was truly exceptional.
I also want to give a heartfelt shoutout to my niece and nephew, Ivy and Danny. They bring immense joy to my life and are the loves of my life, reminding me of what truly matters.
My friends, including Joie, Chanelle, Janay, LuLu, Brandy, Robert, and Yasmeen, deserve immense credit and recognition. They have been my foundation and a constant source of support, standing by me through all of life’s challenges and triumphs. If I had to choose my circle of friends all over again, it would be them, each and every time.
Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to my yoga family. The community at the yoga studio has been nothing short of phenomenal. The relationships I have formed, both on and off the mat, have been invaluable. These individuals have seen me for who I am, understanding the pain I have endured and caused, yet loving me consistently without judgment. To Mina, Jay, Jenny, Marianna, Sundy, Eliot, Kinza, Lorielle, Mod, Jill, and so many others, thank you all for being a part of my journey and my life. Your support and friendship mean the world to me.
