Meet Akshay Ravi | Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Akshay Ravi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Akshay, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I believe that legacy is something that we leave behind every time that we leave a room – how people remember us when we’re not there dictates how we relate to others and the work that we do. I hope that, in every legacy that I leave in every room, people feel uplifted and appreciated – my personal driving force is being able to help raise up all the people around me, and I want to be remembered as someone who tried to do that wholeheartedly.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Having grown up on going to the movies with my dad and performing in community theatre, I’ve always felt like storytelling and the creative arts have been in my veins. I’ve always loved collaborating with people and the mutual thrill of really getting excited about an idea, developing it out, and bringing it to life. As someone who also loved making random things growing up, I’ve also always loved the process of creative work and bringing out the best in the people that I’m working with. I got lucky to go to USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, and since graduating in 2020, I’ve had the privilege to just take on projects and try my hardest to just make things. While it’s not always an easy path, what has kept me driven is my desire to just keep getting better and the incredibly motivating creative community that I’m surrounded by constantly. I love being pushed to do and be better, and I’m lucky that every experience I’ve had has contributed to that. While I’m far from an expert at what I do, I have an innate desire and push to just keep learning and growing as much as I possibly can.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Assuming we have unlimited energy, we’ve got to go to Escondido Falls to start the day with a good hike, then come back into the city and chow down at Pijja Palace. Then we’d go to Venice, walk around Abbot Kinney, before making our way up to the Malibu beaches for sunset.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, the people who have uplifted me the most in my life has been my family. Through every bad decision and terrible mistake, and also in the moments that I have felt most successful, I rely on my family to provide the backbone and support system that keeps me motivated, perseverant, and happy.
My biggest life inspiration has come from a Bollywood movie called 3 Idiots, which I watched at a very formative age, and which reminded me to always pursue excellence in my craft and in my work. I’m always deeply motivated by becoming better and by challenging myself through process, and I really digested that message through watching the film.
