We had the good fortune of connecting with Al Chang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Al, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Growing up in Los Angeles’s Korea Town as the oldest of three boys and a first-generation Korean-American, my life was deeply influenced by the cultural shifts that followed the post-L.A. riots. During those formative years, I developed a strong desire to pursue acting, which was ignited by watching movies like Goonies, Sandlot, and Mighty Ducks. However, it felt like a distant dream, and I had no idea how to take the first steps into that world, so it remained a mere afterthought.

Instead, I initially ventured into the world of music during my teenage years and early twenties. Together with two close friends, I formed a hip-hop group. This period coincided with a time when Asian hip-hop artists were gaining traction in the industry, making the pursuit of music and rapping seem more attainable. All we needed was a microphone, some talent, the right connections, and a bit of hope for success. While it may sound somewhat naive, the music industry often thrives on that blend of enthusiasm and determination, propelling us forward despite the challenges we faced. Subsequently, I worked as a paralegal at an entertainment law firm for a while, but the recession hit, and I swiftly made the decision to enlist in the military. My intention was to leverage the benefits provided by the military for education and fully pursue my dream of becoming a filmmaker in some capacity.

From aspiring actor to a member of a hip-hop group reflects the twists and turns that life can take, especially in creative pursuits. Despite the different paths I explored, my experiences growing up in Korea Town, witnessing cultural shifts, and being part of a generation where dreams could be realized with talent and determination have all played a pivotal role in shaping my aspirations and the choices I’ve made. Whether I decide to continue pursuing acting or explore other creative avenues, my unique background and life experiences will always be integral to my story. It’s hard trying to cram years of my life into a few paragraphs but that’s the gist and here I am, on that journey.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I grew up watching classic TV shows like the Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, X-Files, and LOST. These shows, with their knack for telling intriguing stories within the sci-fi and unconventional genre lenses, have deeply influenced my storytelling approach.

Personally, I’ve always had a fascination for stories that don’t hit you over the head with their message. I believe in letting the audience think for themselves rather than spoon-feeding them. We’ve all come across movies or shows that are just too on the nose, and they often end up achieving the opposite of what they intended.

Every story, no matter how big or small, carries a message. But my goal has always been to take a story in unexpected directions. While I love directing and writing, my heart truly lies in editing. Editing allows me to shape a narrative through performance, explore various editing techniques, and it truly is the final rewriting process. It’s in the solitary process of post-production that I often discover that the story has a life of its own, and what I find there can sometimes surpass my initial intentions.

I’m currently focused on building my portfolio across various aspects of filmmaking, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by like-minded individuals who share my passion for this craft. My goal is to collaborate with as many talented individuals as possible and to continually immerse myself in environments where I’ll be challenged and pushed to grow.

I hold a strong belief in the importance of representation in storytelling. Filmmakers have a unique opportunity to explore lives and perspectives that might otherwise remain hidden or inaccessible. There’s a profound responsibility to tell these stories authentically and give voice to the incredibly talented Asian American community eager to showcase their skills to the world. Through my projects, I aspire to contribute to this endeavor and shine a spotlight on this pool of talent.

In my journey, I’ve deliberately ventured into different genres, each presenting its own distinct set of challenges and learning opportunities. Starting with a crime drama, transitioning to comedy, and now delving into a suspense thriller that explores the perils of social media and the lengths people will go to for a taste of fame. These diverse projects have broadened my horizons and provided invaluable experiences, helping me evolve as a filmmaker with each new endeavor.

I never set out to be different, we’re all inherently unique, even when we try to fit in. Along my journey, I’ve made more mistakes than I can keep track of. I’ve lived through a variety of experiences and learned some valuable lessons. Now, I’m at a point in my life where I have to be guided by my own convictions, even while listening to advice and trying to apply it where it fits. I know what I’m pursuing, and I hope that the knowledge I’ve gathered along the way will serve my purpose.

Succeed or fail, it has to be on my own terms.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Packing House is always a good variety of foods. My favorite goto spot is here in Buena Park called SUP NOODLES. It’s a Pho spot that serves Lomo Saltado, and it can’t be beat. Plus their broth is unlike anywhere else I’ve tried. I’m a huge sucker for Disneyland so I look for any excuse to walk around and kill my legs. Last but not least, we have to hit up a Korean BBQ spot in L.A.. Most likely an all you can eat spot to really send them on their way.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My most steadfast supporters and biggest source of inspiration are my wonderful wife and children. They are the driving force behind everything I do, providing unwavering encouragement and motivation. All four of my kids names start with L’s, that’s the meaning behind my production name, 4LC Film. This unique family connection serves as a constant reminder of my purpose and dedication.

Throughout my journey, my family has never wavered in their belief in me, even when my dreams appeared unconventional or fraught with risk. Their unwavering support has been my cornerstone.

I’m also deeply indebted to my professors and friends who offer me candid and constructive feedback. Their honesty has played an integral role in my growth and development. Any semblance of success I’ve achieved is a testament to their guidance and influence.

To every individual I’ve had the privilege of working with, be it under favorable or challenging circumstances, I owe a debt of gratitude. Each experience has contributed to shaping the person I am today and has been an invaluable part of my journey. While there are too many names to mention individually, I consistently express my appreciation to all those who have played a role in my professional and personal development. Thank you for making me better and helping me grow.
