We had the good fortune of connecting with Alejandro Ansoleaga and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alejandro, what are you inspired by?
I’m inspired by authenticity and artists that have the conviction to express themselves without any regard for how their work may be received. Especially in the comedic space where I think a lot of people today feel a concern over what they can and can’t say, I appreciate those that are willing to fearlessly put out whatever they think is funny and let the chips fall where they may.

Having said that, I do think the tides have changed a little bit and people out there yearning for irreverent comedy. I’d like to think as long as a person’s intentions are good they should be able to do whatever it is they think is funny without fear and hope that it resonates. It’s like the saying goes, “I don’t know what’s the secret to success but the recipe for failure is trying to please everyone.” Unfortunately I think that quote is attributed to Bill Cosby so certainly don’t be like him.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Like every independent filmmaker it’s always a challenge coming up with the funding necessary to bing your vision to life so I take great pride in doing more with less. Nothing in filmmaking is easy, it’s a constant test of your will but that’s wherein lies the beauty of being a Director. It’s been a long road that started with about fifteen years of stand up comedy, and I’m certainly not yet where I’d like to be, but I’m excited to be in a place where I’m constantly learning new things and new opportunities are opening up every day. Also I’m broke, so if you are reading this and happen to have deep pockets, please find a way to DM me so that I can explain how you too can be a producer.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is normally where I lose friends. Whenever I have a friend coming to town I feel an incredible amount of anxiety because I don’t wanna go anywhere. There’s no better place than my apartment if you ask me. My dog is there plus I got a Traeger for my birthday. Why would I leave?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Joe Callahan – Producer and Director of Photography

Joe’s an extremely talented DP who has his own creative agency that works on commercials but still finds the time to work in independent films when he has the chance.
