We had the good fortune of connecting with Alejandro Cuauhtemoc and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alejandro, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My father would always tell me about his years as an actor for a traveling theater company. He did it with such passion and enthusiasm that I decided to give Acting a try myself, and enrolled on a small theater school in Mexico City when I was 15. I gave my first step onto the stage and I knew it immediately: I was meant for this. My connection to the stage is natural. I feel happy when I perform, I love to express the author ideas through my body. Nowadays I keep finding deeper meanings to why I pursue acting, but the essence is in the joy that it makes me feel and how it aligns to my life purpose.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a professional actor from Mexico City whose biggest dream has always been to be a full time artist. Along the way the challenges became more about keeping myself happy and lighthearted, diligent and patient while building up my mental health and self confidence. I came to LA a few months after my mother passed away from pancreatic cancer. I came here selected by the Art of Acting Studio, but just knowing very little English, and still very ignorant of how things work in the United States. The necessity to survive awakened a relentless energy, an euphoric state of mind in which Acting became my powerhouse. Thinking about my characters and rehearsing lines during my working hours kept me going. Everything was great when I was onstage. I enjoyed the LA experience and my school at is most. Then the pandemic happened and our world shattered. I kept myself active by doing Shakespearean monologues that I posted on instagram, but the impossibility of going back home quickly escalated into a depression that I am so glad to tell now just as a past experience. I quit acting for a few months after I did a tv commercial, I didn’t like myself, and every single one of my decisions felt as a step on the wrong direction.
That’s when the audition for Sama Sama came to my hands and I couldn’t feel but the urge to get out there and do my best to get the role. I got the part, and worked as a paid actor for a full year. After that, new auditions and opportunities presented to me. My last gig as an actor was in HOPE, a theater show for the Latino Theater Company in coproduction with LAVC. For that role I got nominated to the Irene Ryan Award in the KCACTF region 8, in which I made it to the finals and received the National Finalist Alternate recognition.
I still have tons of things to learn as an actor, and that is alright, very exciting to me. I feel inspired and full of joy. I just want to live this life with every cell of this human body. And as a friend says: “if you’re gonna hit it, hit it till it breaks”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start with a welcome night at Las Perlas, a mezcalería located in a West Hollywood. It has the best Mexican food of the area and the ambience is just perfect: lively and youthful. Next day I’ll take my friend to a hike in Griffith Park because I love the observatory. After that we’ll go to the Getty Center and the next day we’ll do our suitcases and drive towards the a north, hoping to make to Yosemite. I love Yosemite, it’s my favorite place on Earth.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this Shoutout to the East West Players Theater Company in Los Angeles, Giovanni Ortega, and Daphnie Sicre. By the beginning of 2023, after pandemic, I was going through a very rough time regarding my acting career. It was hard for me to believe in myself and I almost quit. But then the EWP called for auditions for Sama Sama, a theater show for young audiences. I got casted, and after that a dream tour around LA brought me back to life and reconnected me to my acting related dreams.
