We had the good fortune of connecting with Alena Zozulenko and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alena, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
One of the most difficult choices I ever made was to relocate to the United States and pursue my artistic career there. It meant leaving behind the familiar surroundings of my family and friends and venturing into a completely unfamiliar territory where I was virtually unknown. This kind of decision isn’t something everyone would find challenging. Thankfully, I had friends in America who provided significant support during the initial stages of my transition. Rebuilding my life was no easy task, but having a job that I am passionate about makes it all worthwhile.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After completing my university studies in architecture, I found myself heavily involved in drawing. I developed a collection of graphic works that were reproduced on T-shirts and bags, and these items were available for purchase at a designer store in Saint Petersburg. As my passion for drawing and graphics grew, it gradually led me towards the world of tattooing. Initially, I started by creating custom sketches on demand, and eventually I took the plunge to become a professional tattoo artist. Over the course of more than six years, I have been dedicated to the art of tattooing, crafting unique designs for each project.

My style primarily revolves around a “graphic” aesthetic, and I have a strong affinity for black tattoos. There is a timeless and traditional quality to them that I find captivating. The simplicity they offer on the body is less intrusive in everyday life. Working with a limited color palette encourages a thoughtful approach to composition, form, and a more meticulous consideration of contrast.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is home to a breathtaking destination called El Matador Beach. This extraordinary place features immense rocks, a beautiful sandy beach, and crashing waves. Its picturesque qualities are reminiscent of scenes straight out of a movie. Without a doubt, I highly recommend visiting this captivating location.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Self-belief is crucial! In this journey called life, you have the potential to reach any heights you desire. The key lies in not setting mental barriers for yourself, surrounding yourself with the right individuals, having unwavering faith, and putting in the necessary hard work.
