Meet Alexa Dony | Nail Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexa Dony and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexa, what do you attribute your success to?
Confidence and drive
We’ll always be our own worst critics. We’re so used to our own work that we always underestimate how it appears to others. To run a brand, however, you need to have the confidence to find your footing in your industry and put out your work into the world. You need to be confident in your identity, your product, your marketing, your platform, your audience, and your ideas to be able to sell it to someone else.
Once you have it the rest is drive. How badly do you want to see success? How will you consistently deliver quality? Are you willing to make changes by listening to your consumer base?

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to view my work as art that you get to take with you everywhere. Instead of hanging it on the wall or displaying it on the coffee table, it follows you everywhere. Everything you do is now more beautiful: holding a cup of coffee, washing your face, ringing the bell on the bus, unlocking your door.
I’ve always been keen on having nails, I started doing my own when local salons couldn’t produce the ideas in my head. I just started experimenting with different products and tools. I remember one day I went to this party and I had a few girls compliment my nails and tell me they would pay me for it. I feel grateful I can make money doing something that excites me so much.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m based in Vancouver, BC. We’re right above Washington and California so it’s known as the tropics of Canada. We have the ocean, the mountains, the city, and the forest. Here’s where I would take a friend to…
(In no particular order)
Eat: Anh and Chi, Down Low Chicken, Jam Cafe, King Yo Japanese, Jang Mo Jib Korean, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka
Drink: The Emerald, DD Mau, Boxcar, Bodega, Chupito, The Narrow Lounge, Paradise
Visit: Richmond Night Market, Granville Market, Science World, PNE/Playland, Wreck Beach, Capilano Provincial Park

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My close friend Cheyenne Bengco has always rooted for me, always challenged me, and always believed in me even before I was doing nails on others. I’ve always done her nails for free because she always lets me practice any technique or style I want. I owe a lot of my confidence and my progress to her.
