We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexander Holcombe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexander, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always had a knack for playing fighting games and always found the process of learning combos and maximizing the damage output to be a very fascinating venture. However, I never had a place to play with people who played certain fighting games, and most of my friends I grew up with didn’t play certain games as competitively as me. I began to think, “What if I started my own business, and gave other people the ability to come together and play with/learn from one another”. End of 2016, I spoke with my mother about hosting video game events and she said to me, “You have to be out of your mind that won’t work”. Then during that year’s Christmas Dinner, my mother approached me after some time thinking and told me to “push for it, get yourself a team and push for it, I think you can make that a reality.” Thinking about how to start things I reached out to one of my closest friends who had an idea behind legal work and reached out to another one of my friends who was interested in completing the vision, and we needed a house to meet at since my mom didn’t want guest over at the time. They came up with the name, Mid-Tier Summit. The name exemplifies the following idea of “support and guide players to help them reach their peak”
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mid-Tier Summit is a gaming organization whose goal is to help spread ESports and educate new video gamers on how to reach the next step. We host events at varying locations, from LAN Centers like The Meta to libraries like South Huntington to Freeport. We establish ourselves as a powerhouse in the gaming community by assisting other organizations to achieve their goals in the gaming community and spreading our message with each opportunity we receive. It was not easy. We received a lot of help and advice from members of the community and we lost some core members along the way. The biggest lesson I learned from all of this is to take advice early on and not let your ego cloud your judgment, we have been successful because we are always eager to receive feedback and learn from past experiences where we have seen other organizations fall because of that. I want the world to know that, whatever you like to do, there is a home for it. You will find a group of people who will welcome you with open arms and understand you. You are truly never alone in this world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly, that’s kind of hard, Long Island has great things like the wineries and some amusement parks. I cannot give a clear answer to that outside of, “Go to the City”. Farmingdale just opened up a rage room, that might be nice.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother, Aileen, and my brother, Alonzo, are the first to get a shoutout. They pushed me from the very beginning to start this business and have been guiding me through every step of the way. Next would be my wife, Brittany, who joined me during this epic quest of gaming. She has been nothing but helpful towards our success and supported me to where I am today. The next shoutout goes to my co-founders, Joseph and Kinsey. Joseph was the main brains behind the operation and helped guide the ship to where it is currently. Kinsey, who was also my best man, has been my constant support and partner in crime, I cannot do Mid-Tier Summit without him. My last shoutout will be to everyone who has supported MTS throughout the years, from Helst who runs NYC Tekken, to Tom and Mikey who helped us build the gaming community on Long Island. To the friends who helped push us in the beginning, to the players now who support the scene. Thank you all.
