We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Fasulo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My arrival into the business world was unplanned, and unexpected, if I am being honest. It came out of necessity when I quit my job in 2015 with no idea what I was going to do – I just knew I couldn’t work in an office. I ended up trying out 5+ different side hustles, landing on freelance writing with Fiverr. One thing led to another, and I discovered that I not only loved working for myself, but that I was destined to be in the business world forever. It’s the best ‘irresponsible’ decision I have ever made.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I always say I feel like I am pioneering a new way to do business that hasn’t gone mainstream yet. I am a proponent of the ‘business of one,’ which means it’s just me, at the head of my business, and a network of independent contractors who take on work as needed via outsourcing. It’s a working model that every single person is going to be able to deploy in the future, and certainly one that other freelancers can – and should – adopt.

I actually wrote an entire book on the concept, called Freelance Your Way to Freedom, which is out everywhere, including Barnes & Noble!

Along the way, I have learned that if you want to succeed in business, you have to detach your personal ego from the work you are putting out there. You can’t be offended by feedback or if a client doesn’t like your work. Not everyone is going to like it, and that’s ok. Business is business, and the sooner you can detach your ego from your business entity, the more successful you are going to be.

As someone who comes from a village/farm in Upstate New York, I want everyone to know that the American Dream IS alive and well, and that applying yourself, working hard, and believing in your future can help you attain truly anything you want.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, since my best friend is also my business partner and financial manager, I have already convinced her to move to Florida with me. There isn’t anywhere I would be living that she wouldn’t also be living in, too! I am very engaged with the people in my inner circle, and it’s very important for me to be in the same area as them. I talk to my mom, stepdad, sister, best friend, and a few other friends in that circle every single day – it’s essential for me.

But, on a typical travel day, you can find me and Bri walking about 20,000 steps, hiking, going to hole-in-the-wall cafes and food places, drinking Merlot at a happy hour at a local pub, and probably going on some kind of creative walking tour (or haunted tour) in the evening.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I always go for my mom, first. She is an entrepreneur and was such a good role model to my sister and I growing up. She always cheers me on and encourages my business ideas. I never feel judgment or doubt from her when I tell her about something I am going to try – and for that, I am eternally grateful. My sister and I call her ‘momager.’
