We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandria Mattox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandria, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from Southwest Atlanta– the city of affluent black people and music that has redefined the culture of hip hop.
I was raised around success and strong family ties to entrepreneurship. My family founded Believers Bible Christian Church on Campbellton Rd., and my involvement in the church was my first introduction to my sense of community and business. From grocery distribution every Saturday to serving in youth ministry, I knew that in my career I wanted to pursue something that could bring communities together.
When it was time for me to choose where I’d go to school for undergrad, I followed the footsteps of my older sister and chose Spelman College. Spelman implements in all the students that it is our choice to change the world, and we’re charged to do that the moment we leave those gates. For me, I took the responsibility of changing the culture of power politics within my job.
I started my career in entertainment while I was still a college student. Being around so many talented people at the most respected HBCU could’ve put me in a position to be intimidated, however, it motivated me. It made me want to be active in organizations that poured into my curiosity of both business and entertainment.
Today, I work at one of the top talent agencies in Hollywood doing Commercial Endorsements and Music Brand Partnerships. My city, my communities, and my upbringing has been very impactful in who I am and where I plan on taking my career.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Resources and research are two things that I make a point in utilizing in every area of my life. I have benefited from being a planner and setting goals for myself.
Professionally, it is never easy to break into a career in entertainment because it is an oversaturated industry full of people who want to make it for different reasons. I believe it is important to set your “why” before you choose to pursue business because it keeps you grounded.
I have learned that if I want to be satisfied in my career, I had to learn to use my voice to not get overlooked. I am my biggest advocate, and I make sure to always come with creative ideas or something that’s beneficial in order to grow.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a LA transplant so I have no idea where the locals hang out!
However, if I had my best friend come out here I would spend a lot of time in Malibu or Orange County. Coming from a state that is not surrounded by water and then moving to California has been so interesting because the accessibility to hang out by the water is so convenient.
My only food recommendation would be to go to Rockin Cajun in Carson and get a shrimp and crawfish poboy and mango peach lemonade.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am without the support of my family, and the grace and favor God has on my life!
