Meet Alexis Brooks | Integrative and Functional Women’s Health Dietitian & Endometriosis Advocate

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business out of necessity and personal experience. When I was at my worst during my journey to getting a proper diagnosis for endometriosis, I felt lost. I was hopping from doctor appointment to doctor appointment searching for answers. When doing my own research I quickly realized that there is a shortage of resources for women’s health. Furthermore, reputable resources were even more scarce. There were many times I came across information that was outdated or completely inaccurate. I became especially concerned at the thought of me having a hard time finding reliable information as a health care provider. I imagined how much more difficult it would be for someone who does not have a background in healthcare. I told myself that once I got to the other side of this, I would use my experience to help others.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My practice is unique in that I work exclusively with women’s health related concerns through an integrative and functional lens. I take a root cause approach that treats the person as a whole, not in parts or merely the symptoms, As as a result, people are able to experience improved wellbeing overall. As a registered dietitian, I understand the power of nutrition. At the same time, I have an understanding of the nuances of food and the profound role culture and our relationship with food plays in our overall health. I work with clients to create a customized plan that is tailored to their life. You won’t find me handing out any cookie cutter meal plans or recommending any restrictive diets. In life there is a harmony and balance to everything. This is one of the things people who I work with appreciate the most about me. Additionally, in my practice I don’t focus solely on food and nutrition. I guide my clients through lifestyle modifications as well. This includes optimizing sleep, movement, and home and personal care product use.
Alexis Brooks Nutrition is ever evolving and I am open to continued growth and lessons along the way. I got where I am today in my business by actively listening to my community. Though I personally know what it is like to be diagnosed with endometriosis, I have found such value in seeking out and listening to the stories of other women who are struggling to understand their bodies as I was. There’s such commonality we share while also having distinct journeys and needs. It is these women who inspire the decisions I make in my business to better serve them.
I am proud that I am a provider that women of color can see themselves in. With less than 3% of registered dietitians being Black and an even smaller percentage specializing in women’s health, I did not see someone who looked like me doing this type pf work during my journey. This is important because research has shown that people, particularly those of color, achieve greater outcomes when they have similar backgrounds to their providers. My hope is that all women of diverse backgrounds will receive the care they deserve.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Long Beach is one of my favorite cities. It is diverse, rich in culture, eclectic and has beautiful sights. I would make sure we hit up a lot of the local spots. We’d start off with brunch at the Breakfast Bar. From there, we’d rent bikes and ride along the bike path. Once we make it to Belmont shore we chill on the beach and people watch. While in Belmont Shore we pop into Saint & Second for a bite to eat. If it’s the 4th week of the month we’re definitely checking out 4th Friday to visit all the local shops for some fun finds on 4th street. There’s always great energy as the community celebrates together. If it happens to be the first week of the month, we’re hanging out at the Bixby Knolls art walk where we can listen to live music, view art and enjoy great food with a lively crowd. On a sunny day we’ll make it out to Naples for some fun in the water. Stand up paddle board and canoeing are great options. If we’re feeling fancy, we may even take a ride on the gondola through the canals. I’ve got to round off the chill with a little bit of night life. While 2nd street and Pine fit the bill, I’d want to pop out of the city for a moment to salsa at Golden Rose in Buena Park. Before our trip ends, I’m making sure we also enjoy some of my favorite LB coffee shops-Viento y Agua, Stereoscope, and Good time. Lastly, we’ve got to make it to Ubuntu for good vibes and good food.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people have been co creators of my story, including people I know personally and people I have admired from afar. The short answer would be my community. I am grateful for everyone who poured into me as I healed. My family and friends have been supportive and a source of inspiration. A special shoutout to my best friend of over 25 years, Erin, who’s encouragement helped me advocate for myself during my journey.
