We had the good fortune of connecting with Allyshia Gupta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allyshia, how do you think about risk?
Jim Carrey once gave a speech about risk that has stuck with me since. He began by explaining how many of us will spend our entire lives “imagining ghosts and worrying about the future.” We consume ourselves with the destructive thoughts of all the things that can go wrong but rarely stop to imagine all the things that can go right. Every decision we make in life is either out of love or fear and I, like many, had been governed by fear disguised as practicality. I was working jobs I didn’t like because it felt safe. As I was walking into the office one morning it hit me that I would spend majority of the rest of my working life and career doing something that I dreaded. That same day I gave my two weeks notice and never looked back. I do not claim to know the deep philosophical meaning of life, however, I do understand the sanctity of it. We are given only one life and I believe we have a responsibility to ourselves to enjoy it. In my opinion, life truly begins the moment you are not afraid to fail, to risk, and to dream. The only thing that stands in the way of people doing this is the fear of failure. But here’s the catch; the safe option can fail too. In fact, failure is an inevitable stop on the way to success. So, if you can do what you love and fail or do what you hate and fail – you might as well take a chance at doing what you love.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Jewls by Lee began during the pandemic after I recognized a need for mask fashion. I was constantly forgetting my mask in the car or at home. I also noticed that when I wasn’t wearing my mask I was storing it in my purse or on a table full of germs. So, I created a mask chain that connects to any mask and can be easily worn around your neck all day so that you never forget your mask again. Not to mention it stays clean and close to you while making a fashion statement. Since then, I have created my own E-Commerce business selling mask chain and have expanded to making other jewelry and goods which are all available on my website.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Before the pandemic I really enjoyed going to melrose trading post for some artistic inspiration and to support other small business owners and creatives like myself! After a bit of shopping, I grab a coffee at Alfred’s and head up to Runyon Canyon with my dog for a hike and great view. If you have never been to LA before I would say head over to Rodeo Drive for some people watching and a good dinner. However, if you have more time or a long weekend I would tell you to take a drive out to Joshua Tree and stay in one of the many interesting airbnbs and get in touch with nature. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is an entire army of people who have inspired, mentored and guided me throughout my life. I am in particularly inspired by Jim Carreys entire philosophy on life, risk, and failure. We are more in control of our future and success than most people realize and once you understand this you have a universal key that will open most doors for you. I highly recommend manifesting what you want in life and believing in yourself more than anyone else possibly could. A great book that explains the power of this is called, “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne.
