We had the good fortune of connecting with Alvin Archibald and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alvin, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One aspect of the tattoo industry that outsiders often underestimate is the emotional and therapeutic role that tattoos can play in people’s lives. Tattoos are not just ink on skin; they can be deeply meaningful and symbolic, helping individuals commemorate life events, heal from past experiences, or express their identities. As tattoo artists, we often serve as part artist, part therapist, helping clients through their personal journeys.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Paper and pencil have always been my closest companions; I’ve been drawing relentlessly since I was about four years old. This isn’t just a job for me; it’s a lifestyle, an integral part of who I am.

What sets me apart from many of my peers and fellow artists is my unique background and career trajectory. My education is rooted in architecture, culminating in a master’s degree in archaeological restoration and conservation. I then embarked on a journey through the fashion industry.

Over the years, I’ve served as a clothing and shoe designer, a design manager for renowned brands in my country, and a personal consultant to numerous celebrities, fashion magazines, and television channels. Additionally, I had the privilege of working as a fashion editor for a globally recognized fashion channel for two years. My versatility, innate curiosity, and unwavering passion for exploration have been the driving forces behind my success, something that fills me with pride.

Reaching my current professional standing has been far from easy. Throughout my journey, my unyielding curiosity and ever-evolving hunger for change have been my guiding lights. I cannot predict the future, but you might just as easily find me in a different country, pursuing an entirely different profession. Life is full of surprises.

Regarding overcoming challenges, I adopted a simple approach: I immersed myself in my work, seeking solace in my creative space whenever faced with adversity. As I’ve grown older and gained a deeper understanding of both people and the industry I work in, I’ve become more resilient. I’ve learned not to let setbacks affect me negatively, recognizing that life will always throw challenges our way. The key is to discern which negativities are relevant to you and to focus on what truly matters.

Reflecting on the lessons learned during this journey, I’ve come to realize that the process of learning is perpetual. When you acknowledge the divine spark within you, you comprehend the vast potential for creation and your insatiable thirst for knowledge.

The world should know that I am a person of endless surprises. Today, I may be a tattoo artist, but tomorrow, I could be designing a refrigerator. I refuse to confine myself to a mold, and I encourage you to do the same. Embrace the boundless possibilities of life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a Turk, I’d aim to create a memorable week-long itinerary for my best friend that reflects our appreciation for good food, stylish attire, and enjoying life to the fullest. While I would love to offer them a taste of the vibrant nightlife, I understand that it may differ from what they’re accustomed to, given the earlier closing times. Therefore, I would plan a well-rounded experience that includes nature excursions, relaxing beach days, visits to iconic museums, and exploration of notable landmarks.

For satisfying quick bites during the day, here are some of my top choices:

Morning Coffee:

Verve, Barnine, Rykn, Avva (I’m particularly fond of a Black Americano)
Breakfast:

The Sycamore Kitchen (try their Cornmeal Ricotta Pancake)
Tartine (indulge in their Salmon Tartine)
The Great White (enjoy their Club Sandwich)
Lunch:

Pizzeria Sei (their menu offers a wide range of options)
Cecconi’s (don’t miss their Cavatelli with lamb)
Lorenzo California (try The Lorenzo)
Jeff’s Gourmet Sausage Factory (savor the Western burger)
Dinner:

Malibu Seafood (opt for the seafood combo)
Bacari Silverlake (offering a diverse menu, there’s something for everyone)
South Beverly Grill (you can’t go wrong with any choice)
Los Angeles is undoubtedly a beautiful city, but I acknowledge that coming from Istanbul, it may appear smaller with a more limited array of options. Nevertheless, I’d strive to showcase the city’s unique charm and the diverse experiences it has to offer, ensuring my friend enjoys an unforgettable visit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my incredible family who have supported my artistic journey from the age of 4, nurturing my love for drawing. Their unwavering encouragement and belief in me have been the foundation of my success. I’m also deeply grateful to my teachers who recognized my potential and always pushed me to achieve great things in the world of art. Lastly, I owe a significant part of my success to my own unwavering passion and dedication. I’ve never stopped exploring and studying various branches of art, which has allowed me to make a fulfilling career as a tattoo artist today.
