We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Devries and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alyssa, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I was younger, I was solely focused on my career. I remember thinking that youth theatre and improv were the most important things in the world to me, which is so goofy looking back. I think with being forced to slow down from the pandemic, graduating college, and making a community I really love, I’ve realized that I do my best work when I’m fulfilled in my life as well. Nothing is more important than being happy, so I try to just chase that feeling. It’s helped a lot with the balance!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a content creator that focuses in comedy based content! While comedy takes center stage, I also make content about fashion, beauty, crafting/diy, and the LGBTQ+ community- which I’m proudly a member of. I started seriously posting on TikTok in 2020, and it has morphed into my livelihood! I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned from TikTok and Instagram are that consistency is key. If you’ve ever wanted to create content, just start, post every day, and once you find out what people are enjoying from you: you’ve got your formula and you go from there. And if you’re lucky, which I know I am, you’ll gain a fabulous community. People are very kind to me online, which has shocked and touched me! I feel like everyone says people online are evil, and I have experienced a bit of that, but the majority of people who stumble onto my content are sweeties. Transitioning into the thing I’m most excited about: I met my girlfriend, Lauren on TikTok! Can you believe?! We both started doing social media because she majored in screenwriting, I majored in comedy, and we wanted a way into the industry. We are currently working on our first ever creative project together, a sapphic romcom web series called Pain in the Neck, and our Kickstarter is live now! The concept is: When the zombie apocalypse strikes, a goofy vampire and a melodramatic human rely on each other to survive, finding romance along the way. We’ve got 8 ten minute episodes that we’re planning on releasing on YouTube next October if we can reach our goal. The campaign closes December 1st at midnight, so we’re in crunch time! http://kck.st/40okXuh The web series is the most exciting creative thing in my life, but Lauren will always be the thing that has come of social media that I’m most excited about.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My mind immediately goes to food. If I my best friend was in town, I’d take them to Silverlake House in Silverlake for Thai, Cafe The Barn in Ktown for Korean, Porto’s for my favorite salad ever: the cilantro Caesar with croissant croutons, Musso and Frank’s in Hollywood for a fancy dinner, and Lobster and Beer in Culver City for… lobster and beer. I also adore tiki bars and Tiki No in Noho is my fav. We would do the Swan Boats in Echo Park because it never gets old to me, go to the Getty museum, see a movie at Hollywood Forever Cemetery with a big group of friends, and do my most favorite thing: vintage shopping around town. My favorite places to shop are The Bearded Beagle, Wasteland on Melrose, and estate sales. Living in LA is the estate sale jackpot, and my favorite part of all is getting to see the inside of someone else’s house- especially the older ones! I’d also try and bring them to one of my shows: I do character monologues with Back Pocket Comedy directed by John Milhiser and sketch with Wiggle Room at the Pack Theater.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to Amanda Bynes! I used to wake up at 5 am to watch reruns of the Amanda Show, and I’m certain it’s the reason I do comedy. She is the Carol Burnett (another woman who inspires me) of children’s sketch comedy. To Miss Leigh Scarritt and all of my theatre educators- I owe it all to you. In 2017, I was given the NATAS trustees scholarship and still present at the PSW Emmys to this day. Shoutout to the television academy for that! I also want to give major props to my mother who has helped with every costume, drove me to rehearsal for so many years, and is my all-around sounding board.
