We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Howard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alyssa, how do you think about risk?
I think of risks as a step in a journey, you can’t have success without risks. When I first started posting on social media almost 10 years ago, I have gone back and forth between posting something, deleting it, posting something again, then deleting it and so on… I was embarrassed of what my peers would think, what they would say about someone who is different than them. I still have those same thoughts in the back of my head to this day saying “Just delete everything you’ll be better off”. Then I remember I don’t want to be the same as everyone else, and all of my best work comes from when I’m not worried about others and what could happen.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I first started on social media, before I knew I wanted to be an actor, I was just posting lifestyle related content… it then slowly transitioned into “hey look at this cool eye makeup I did” and then started branching out into cosplaying. I’m so grateful for what has come from cosplaying and that entire community of friends that I’ve made from it. I’m a huge nerd myself and the opportunities I’ve been given is so surreal and it’s just the beginning. The hardest part about it was I’ve been doing this since I was in high school, and those years are difficult for everyone, given the fact fitting in is the most important thing to a 15 year old. The only thing I struggled with the most is just the THOUGHT of other people not liking what I post or judging me because of it, reality is, most people are extremely supportive.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always have friends who live in different states and will come visit, usually the go-to are the theme parks, Disneyland, Universal Studios, the usual. Other than that I’m a big movie person and so are most of my friends so I love showing them where different things were filmed around the city. But I keep things simple, we don’t have to anything crazy but we can just go to In-N-Out if you’ve never been. All based on what the friend wants to do. I’m here all the time, they have never seen any of the stuff I see everyday.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would be nowhere without my mother, everyone always says “I want to thank my mom” but I’m so fortunate to have the privilege of having my mom be my number one supporter. She gets me better than anyone else and she always tells me “If you’re passionate about something, you can achieve it but you have to give it 110%” I think about that all the time. Nothing pushes me harder than when she tells me that, I always achieve greatness with her around.
