We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Forth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work Life Balance is something that has always been a process. It’s changed from when I worked in a corporate job vs. when I became an entrepreneur. In my corporate life, balance was more about creating boundaries between emails and work related requests and not feeling the pressure to be on call 24/7. As an entrepreneur, balance is more about taking care of my mental health and prioritizing the time to do that so that work and life can flow more easily.
When it comes to working, “balance” could look like working for a few weeks straight and then taking a few days off. Answering work related questions regarding my business on a weekend doesn’t bother me because I give myself the balance of actually taking a break when I’m burnt out or tired…even if it’s a Tuesday morning. As long as I’m taking care of myself by meditation, being in nature surfing or walking, journaling, and resting when I truly feel tired, I am in balance.
Being gentle with myself when I slip off the self-care track is also crucial, and remembering that I have the tools to bring myself back to balance.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Crystal Boutique is a healing lifestyle company that believes “You Are Your Own Healer”. As we collectively shift towards a more conscious people, the world of spirituality and healing is becoming more and more common. We started The Crystal Boutique as a space that was welcome for all to dabble in the world of healing crystals and spirituality – without the intimidating “woo-woo” language that can sometime make people afraid to start their spiritual journey.
When The Crystal Boutique (TCB) started in 2017, I was living in a $6/night guest house in India sourcing crystals from a local crystal dealer who’s family has worked with crystals for decades. TCB has now grown to an online healing lifestyle boutique (TheCrystalBoutique.com) and we have two brick and mortar locations – one in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia and we are currently doing a pop up store on Abbot Kinney in Venice, Los Angeles. When we started we were solely selling crystals and we have now expanded to carrying an array of healing lifestyle products like candles, chic and modern crystal jewelry, and handmade crystal journals.
Most of the challenges along the way in building TCB have been mental – like breaking through fear based mental chatter and not being afraid to “go for it” and give up the cushy corporate paycheck. It’s also been important to take super calculated risks because we boot-strapped the business and had to be super strategic with every dollar spent. I learned to speak another language when opening the store in Bali, Indonesia – so there have definitely been some lessons along the way!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I guess that depends on if we were in Bali or Venice Beach (LA) since I split time between the two! Island Hopping in Indonesia or driving up the coast in California to find some fun surf are definitely going to be on the itinerary. But no matter which place I was in, the day would involve surfing, some yoga, a walk outside along the boardwalk/beach, finding the best matcha nearby, and probably cooking up a delicious vegan meal or getting sushi! For sushi – my friends restaurant, TYGR Sushi in Canggu, Bali or Sugarfish in Los Angeles are pretty much the norm.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my biggest cheerleader through the entire process of building The Crystal Boutique, Dan Stowell. You have been my best friend, cheerleader, therapist, partner and biggest supporter since Day 1. The world needs more hearts like yours, my friend.
