Meet Ami.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ami. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ami., what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Showing up for my craft even when I feel an overwhelming amount of resistance. Practice, repetition, and fearlessness when creating. Taking things one step at a time, completing the next task in front of me instead of feeling like I have a load of responsibilities that I don’t know where to begin to tackle. Also, going outside. People hold the keys to your next chapters and opportunities. It is important to keep your well flowing, seek alignment to the right individuals so your growth is effortless. Remember that there are people that have not been exposed to you and your gifts yet and they NEED to be to reach their next level and be inspired.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My father and mother brought up my siblings and I in music. I am grateful it is in my bones. I began to pursue music in 2018 after studying acting for about 10 years, and I found my footing in the art scene in the DMV (DC, MD, VA) area after attending an open mic held by Alex Vaughn. Each new person I met along my journey shaped my process and trajectory as I built my own community and sound. Curating shows allowed me to appreciate the plethora of eager artists that are discovering themselves in my town.
I have always approached my art from a wholistic view. The visual aspect of my artistry is just as important as the audio aspect. I am obsessed with film, fashion, history, and of course music. My career is my baby. Everything I make is an extension of what is inside of me and what I wish to give to the world.
I am a truth seeker and my intent is that I expose others to the truth that is love and God. The most important lesson I have learned is that your art is a reflection of your spirit. Your art is everything you say, think, entertain, the actions you take, the people you keep around you, the way you curate your life. I want to inspire others to aim for excellence and create works that move you and others. The hardest part of the journey is shedding the habits and thought processes that you realize are keeping you from excelling. Growth and expansion are natural. Allow the flow of your emotions to take you through the journey and don’t get caught up on any one thing. Collaborating with others is an amazing way to make sure you are flowing and moving with life. Having to surrender to a greater picture, hear out and understand the perspective of others, it teaches you things about yourself you could never learn alone.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
On Monday we can go museum hopping! Whitlows on Tuesday for the live jam session run by Jo Palmer. The rooftop at the Eaton Hotel to catch a vibe with some great DJs. Jojo’s on Friday night to see an amazing jazz trio. The drum circle at Meridian Hill Park on Sunday during the day. On Sunday night the Sounds and Spirits open mic at Throw Social by JoNate Leak is always a ki! During the week we can check out some local shops, there are some cute ones at Union Market in NE.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without my team that hurdled around me I would be stagnant and stuck in my head. ApeO, Antonio, John, and my friends and community members that speak life into me and my work, check my self destructive thoughts and replace them with affirming truths, check in and demand that the music be released to the world, thank you.
