We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Hirt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
To be open to and embrace change. The fashion and film industries are always changing and to get stuck in one role or to be too content with one position, client, etc. can lead to a sense of disappointment and self judgement as a creative. It’s beneficial to be open to trying new things and taking on new opportunities as you grow.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m Amy, a freelance wardrobe stylist with over 10 years of experience. I’ve worked on national campaigns, commercials, editorial and e-commerce photo shoots, and more. In the 10 years I’ve been in LA, I’ve done everything from in-house studio work, to personal styling for entertainers and professionals. I’ve gotten to where I am today by always being open to new opportunities and learning from other professionals along the way. There is always something to learn! I love collaborating with other professionals and meeting new creators. It’s inspiring to observe fresh perspectives from storytellers, directors, other stylists and other peers in the industry.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Los Feliz and love my neighborhood and the surrounding areas. It’s always great to start the day with a walk on Hillhurst to grab coffee — some favorites are Maru, Blue Bottle and Alcove. A morning/early afternoon hike to Griffith is a wonderful way to see some views and nature in the city. I’m also a brunch enthusiast, so would take a guest to Little Dom’s, Loupiotte or Cafe Figaro, both which have beautiful outdoor seating and an array of delicious options. I’d also take a guest for a drink at a natural wine bar like Covell or Tabula Rasa, and a Hollywood or Downtown LA rooftop is a great way to end the day with scenic views and great ambiance. In the summer, an outdoor show at the Hollywood Bowl or Greek Theater is a must.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve been lucky to have some very supportive mentors in my early years, working in fashion in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles (shoutout to Deb, Nicole, Brittney and Vasil!) I’ve met so many likeminded creatives along my journey who have offered the encouragement I’ve needed to keep going and to keep the inspiration alive. My family and friends have been supportive of this creative career, especially my husband, Forest, who is hands on when I have a silly idea and is always down to help and be an Instagram photographer in these moments. 🙂
