Meet amy smith | artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with amy smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi amy, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance has been and on and off practice for me. It changes for each stage of life. I used to work a full-time job, come home and find 3 hours a night a few nights a week to paint and then weekends. After becoming a full -time artist I realized the previous structure defined my patterns and I knew my routine. As a full-time artist I had to create my own new routine. I have a son now as well so the balance usually comes from family life and creative life. Honestly I’m still working on it. I think evaluating what works for you and what you need to be happy versus what is taking up too much time and has low results is a first step.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love exploring different mediums. Right now I’m excited about getting back to drawing and combining that with digital work. I let myself play and challenge myself creatively which allows for my style to continue to grow.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s so many places to see in Los Angeles and it’s so spread out. But I’d always suggest going to see a comedy show, live music, or art event. There’s always places with events and galleries open to find inspiration. I would say to check out The Broad, MOCA, and LACMA if it’s your first time in the city.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I learn a lot from Artstorefronts. It the host for my website that also has a section for marketing. They have many podcasts and speak on the business of art. I think that’s super helpful because artists have to wear many hats. It’s great to have references and knowledgable people in your direct field wanting you to succeed.
