Meet Andrea Somer: Personal Trainer & Meditation Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Somer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, how do you think about risk?
I have always embraced change in my life. From back-packing solo in Australia for 3 months as a 19-year old, to moving across the world from Sweden to. LA 7 years ago. My mom taught me early on to always ask myself: “what is the worst thing that can happen?”. Majority of the time the answer is less dramatic than we think.
I try not to see it as taking a “risk”, but more a “chance”. It makes a difference when you view it that way. What can I win if I take this chance? A lot of the time the outcome is even greater than we could possibly have imagined. If not – well then I learned something from it either way. If I did not take chances I would not have moved across the world on my own. met the people I have met, started my own business and living the life of my dreams right now. The most magical things do not come from playing it safe.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My brand is “Body, Mind, Spirit”. I am a certified Personal Trainer, Meditation Teacher & Professional Life Coach. I have been most successful in personal training and something that I believe has set me apart from other trainers is that I have a very holistic approach to fitness. While helping my clients reach their physical goals, their mental health is always my biggest priority. I look at all the components of their lifestyle, and we focus on growth physically, mentally & spiritually. I believe the love I have for what I do really shows in the growth of my clients.
I am proud of so many things. I am proud of myself for moving across the world by myself. For going through a lot of hard losses in life but never giving up. For working hard and not choosing the easy way to a “rich” life in a city with lots of temptation. For always choosing growth and to try spreading as much love & light to other people as I can. I am also proud of all my clients and all the wins that they have made. Every time they win – I win.
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Moving across the world on your own will always have its challenges. Especially with limitations that come with being an immigrant in this country. There have been a lot of times where I thought about moving home or somewhere in Europe. Being new to America with no real support system in place, while being a full-time student, and not being allowed to work created a lot of financial hardships for me starting out.
The biggest struggle for me during these past 7 years has always to be away from my family. My mom and my grandma are my everything, and I miss them a lot. Sometimes I have feelings of guilt and selfishness. It is challenging to find a balance with working hard to build my business up from nothing, while also maintaining my relationships with my family and friends all the way on the other side of the world.
I faced my absolute biggest challenge right in the beginning of my career. One month after quitting my office job and pursuing my dream to work at one of the top gyms in West Hollywood, my dad passed away. My whole world was shattered into pieces. I lost 3 family members in the past 4 years while living away from my family. In these times, it has been extremely hard for me. But, I believe that I have a purpose and have faith that this is where I should be in this moment. I made a commitment to myself to keep moving forward, to stay focused, and pursue the life I want for myself. I have done so much inner work and it has helped me tremendously.
My goal is to continue to live my purpose, spread my light and help people. This is what I live for and that is what I want the world to know me for.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since it is covid times we are a bit more restricted but if my best friend came out to LA I would make sure that we had an amazing time either way. My favorite things to do out here is going out to the beach. One day could be Malibu, starting with brunch at “Malibu Farm”, then head over to a secret spot to lay out on the beach. Another day would be going to Venice, starting with breakfast at “Great White” or “Gjusta”, then spend the day at the beach, ending with a sunset drink up on a rooftop. If we did not go to the beach you probably would find us by a hotel pool. We would work out in the mornings and I would make her take at least one dance class with me, and hike of course. We would go out to dinners at some of my favorite places “L’antica Pizzeria”, “Catch”, “Sugarfish”, “Bacari” and so many others. We would also probably do a day trip somewhere, perhaps to Catalina Island. There are endless things to do in LA which is so amazing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my mom. She is my rock, my best friend, my everything. Without her I would not be half the woman I am today. She always encouraged my to follow my heart and gave me support in everything I do. So thank you mom for everything that you have taught me and all the love I receive from you everyday, even from across the world.
