We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Asemokai and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Pursuing an artistic/creative career is something I had to try, or I knew I would regret forever. My undergraduate degree is in biology, and during that time all I could think and dream about was writing music. I loved film music and craved it. I was told that you can be whatever you want to be as long as you put your mind to it, and even though the pursuit of being a film composer is one of the scariest thoughts I’ve ever had, I knew I had to try.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets my art apart from others is my perspective. I draw inspiration from my friends, family, trials and tribulations. In some of my pieces you can even literally hear breathes of people who mean the most to me.
I’m most proud of being able to make music for a living, surrounded by wonderful people. I don’t take living my dream for granted, I’m extremely grateful. What I’m most excited about currently is assisting and working with Michael Paraskevas. We’ve been working on some super cool projects. One project in particular, that I can’t really talk much about at the moment, has been a dream project, truly surreal to be working on it.
I believe I got to where I am today professionally by putting in a ridiculous amount of hours and surrounding myself with people that believe in me. It wasn’t easy, but I’ve enjoyed the highs and lows of it all. I think the biggest lessons I’ve learned are don’t take things too seriously, though music is important it’s just music, the little details matter, surround yourself with good people, have fun and be kind. I want the world to know a lot of music is headed their way and that exciting projects are coming!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When I plan things for people, I tailor the events specifically for them. I’m always finding cool new places to go and see. The list would probably change after a week. If a special best friend was coming to LA the week would look somewhat like this:
Monday – Pick best friend up and get them settled into my place; Chill night of just driving around LA; Drinks/catching up at the Black Cat or I might cook (I’m a young Wolfgang Puck in the kitchen)
Tuesday – Breakfast at Urth Cafe; Find shops on Fairfax to explore; Walk around The Grove, find a cool place to eat there for lunch; Art District for the Nightlife; Tacos for dinner.
Wednesday – Find a park (probably Griffith) to relax, read, write, and talk; Lunch at Mirate; Walk of Fame; Dinner, currently I’m feeling Thai; Comedy Club
Thursday – I’ll cook breakfast (I’m a young Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen), Museum; Speakeasy to have a chill night
Friday – Breakfast at The Waffle (best waffles in LA); Hike; Santa Monica have lunch at Elephante; Go to the beach catch some sunrays; Find a cool place with live music, probably a So Far event.
Saturday – Find a random new place that looks good; Botanical Garden in Pasadena; Ice Cream; Dinner (restaurant of their favorite cuisine style) maybe Yamashiro
Sunday – Church; Lunch at some fast food restaurant whatever sounds good; Beach again; Dinner at The Penthouse in Santa Monica but we would have to go around Sunset so we could watch it while we ate.
The most fun, interesting, and exciting people are all the people that I hang out with! Most exciting places are all the beautiful places outdoors! Go to the beach, parks, hikes, and trails!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are too many people that I could/should thank. I’m blessed to have the most supporting family, friends and mentors. I would have to first shoutout my wonderful beautiful mother. She gave me the safe space to dream big and then gave me the encouragement and love to pursue those dreams. I also have to give a shoutout to my Uncle Joey, Clint, Jay Mitch, Corbin, Adrianna, Michael Paraskevas, Chris Beck, Tom Holkenborg, Lolita Ritmanis and Lawrence Shragge. They have all given me hope, and I will be forever grateful for them.
