Meet Andrew Fabela | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Fabela and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
To me, taking a risk is like travelling into the unknown. You never really know what to expect until after you take that risk. I know that for me personally taking risks has been a key part of my career as an upcoming creative, and has given me truly wonderful opportunities that I am thankful for every day. I one day decided to take the risk of going to an unknown address in Downtown Los Angeles to assist a photographer on set. Unbeknownst to me, that risk would put my name in the credits of a handful of international magazines afterward as an assistant, eventually leading to being photographer’s assistant on VORAKA Magazine. Since then, I have received many wonderful photography and creative opportunities which have positively impacted my life and helped me flourish in an ever changing industry.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is photography. I have an emphasis on portraiture, with concepts of editorial and fashion photography mixed in as well. I like to show the creative aspects of my clients, and highlight their individual personalities through my creative lens. I’m most proud of the opportunity to have assisted on cover’s for Harper’s BAZAAR Vietnam, Glamour Bulgaria and L’Officiel Arabia to name a few. Those opportunities and experiences have gotten me to where I am today, and have helped me flourish in a very diverse creative industry. I use those opportunities and learn from them in every aspect that I can, and apply that knowledge to my own professional work. I will say that it was not easy. Navigating an industry especially one that I am still relatively new to is hard, but I have found solutions and guidance from other amazing photographer’s and creatives, who I personally consider to me by support network. Networking especially was a key element in overcoming the challenges that I have faced, and has presented me with connections that have been positive and encouraging! I’ve learned my fair share of lessons along the way, but the most important to me is to not be afraid of showing who you are, especially since the photography and creative industries thrive on diverse backgrounds. I personally want my clients, and my audience who sees my work to know that I highlight diverse creative perspectives and that I’m part of a new generation of photographers.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area, I’d definitely take them to these amazing places to eat and drink:
– Brunch at Lady Byrd Café
– Terra Rooftop Restaurant
– Dinner at Soulmate WeHo
Later in the week for some fun experiences, I’d definitely recommend these:
– The Descanso Gardens
– The Last Bookstore
– Hiking trail at Griffith Observatory
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I personally owe all my amazing opportunities to my wonderful mother, Angel Fabela, who has been by my side since I began my dive into the world of photography. Growing up, my mother emphasized positive social connections and to never be afraid to meet someone new. The skills and support network that she has bestowed upon me from a very young age, and continues to provide, has given me opportunities to work with other creatives that many would dream of.
