We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Zox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrew, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
To me, listening and self-awareness are the important facets of making films. As a writer, I try to respect my ideas—it’s easy not to—from the most outlandish and obscure concepts to the most delicate. The hardest part is catching an inkling before it slips away.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a narrative filmmaker, my short film “I Am My Own Mother” premiered at Cannes Cinéfondation, and I’m looking forward to getting my first feature films off the ground–a social realist family drama set in my hometown of Albany, NY, and a psycho-sexual experimental drama set at a wedding.

The films I’ve made are influenced by abstract theater and transcendental cinema. I’m compelled by work that is intimate, unsentimental, and treads the taboo. My favorite pieces break form, as I believe the medium is the message.

In the fine art space, I’m developing an installation piece surrounding 2nd amendment rights. My performance art piece, “My Way Little Girl,” premiered at The John F. Kennedy Center as part of the D.C. Fringe Festival.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Here are some favorites:

Food:
-L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele – Indulge in the pesto pizza. Wow.
-Pailin Thai – Slurp some life altering khao soi.
-Tartine Sycamore – Get the banana cream pie.
-Han Bat Shul-Lung-Tang – Try the beef brisket ox bone soup and unbelievable kimchi.

Sights:
-Browse the Sunday Hollywood Farmers’ Market, followed by a stroll around the Hollywood Reservoir loop. I love the pine trees.
-The Broad is hard to miss.
-La Brea Tar Pits – If this doesn’t give a sense of where we are, then…
-Huntington Gardens

A Drive:
-Weekend in Desert Hot Springs
-Beach day in Malibu
-Hike to the Bridge to Nowhere for a swim in the San Gabriel Mountains

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m grateful for the time I spent in the theater watching and learning from the artwork of Tadashi Suzuki and Robert Wilson whose work commands time and space. The patience, minimalism, and rigor of their approaches and aesthetics were imbued inside of me. I’d also like to dedicate this shoutout to my wife and producer, Kim Parker Zox. Her belief and support is unwavering.
