We had the good fortune of connecting with Anoushka Bhalla and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anoushka, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing about the art industry that outsiders may not be aware of is the extensive behind-the-scenes work that goes into each artwork’s creation, promotion, and exhibition. While the final piece often takes center stage, artists also devote significant time to research, experimentation, and meticulous planning before even starting a project. Additionally, there’s a considerable amount of administrative tasks involved, such as managing finances, organizing exhibitions, networking with galleries and curators, and marketing their work to a broader audience. These aspects of the art industry are essential for artists to thrive but may not be readily apparent to outsiders who primarily see the finished artwork; And let’s not forget that the industry has high setup costs. While this may be apparent with galleries and other businesses, its not so apparent that an artist’s studio is a very expensive venture to run

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

Certainly! My art is deeply rooted in exploring the complexities of the human experience, delving into themes of trauma, memory, and identity. What sets my work apart is its multidimensional nature, often blending elements of painting, sculpture, and installation to create immersive experiences for viewers. I take pride in pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic mediums, using unconventional materials and techniques to evoke visceral responses and challenge perceptions.

What excites me most about my art is its ability to spark meaningful conversations, about things that barely get spoken about, that are forgotten or that are brushed under the rug.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the importance of resilience and perseverance, and to surround oneself with a supportive community of fellow artists and mentors- which is crucial in overcoming challenges and staying motivated.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would probably start out with doing all touristy things since that’s what the tourists want to first get at, especially in NYC- so probably excursions to Central Park, Times Square, Theatre District (especially Broadway shows) and then the better known museums like The Met or MoMA.

Once that’s out of the way, I can show them around my favorite spots, and things I like to do: shop-hopping in SoHo and Williamsburg, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge at night, spending an afternoon at Governor’s Island, book-shopping at McNally Jackson and Strand, reading in the Rose Reading Room at NYPL, spending a morning in Domino Park, vintage shopping in DUMBO and Bushwick, walking across the Highline park, and of course my favorite thing, a day of food crawls in the West Village and then gallery-hopping in Chelsea.

That will pretty much sum up a good New York itinerary- although I’m still missing a great deal of spots around the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Absolutely, my journey wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible support and influence of many. Firstly, a huge shoutout goes to my family for their support and encouragement, and then of course to my partner for being a constant source of inspiration, providing feedback and for his immense support and encouragement.

On the mentorship front, I owe a lot to some amazing individuals here in New York who have guided me with wisdom and insights. Friends have been my creative sounding board, providing encouragement and pushing me to explore new horizons; And lastly, I want to credit the artistic community at large – it’s through shared experiences and a network of like-minded individuals that I’ve found tremendous support and camaraderie.
