We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Anastasi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anthony, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I’d have to go with good old hard work, persistence, and a constant pursuit of growth. For the longest time I was convinced that I’d one day be “discovered” and become an overnight success, or find the silver bullet of marketing and be able to sit back and watch clients line up. Turns out that’s not a great business plan. I’ve learned to focus on the big picture, enjoy the small successes along the way, and maintain a confidence that with enough hardwork over a long period of time I’ll get to where I need to be.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I studied Photojournalism at San Francisco State University, and worked for an online magazine for a bit, but quickly realized after graduation that I just wasn’t passionate about journalism, and had to pivot. When I moved back to Southern California I was really drawn to studio photography. I loved the idea of having complete control of the environment and having the ability to create my own world to shoot; a vast contrast from photojournalism. I also realized I had no idea what I was doing, so I applied for an internship at Milk Studios to learn photo gear, network, and be inspired by other photographers. Fortunately, that internship turned into a full-time job for over two years. Once the pandemic hit I was laid off, which was bitter-sweet. I loved being part of the Milk Family and constantly learning, but it was also an opportunity for me to branch out on my own.

I’ve since built my headshot business piece by piece, and loving the process. I work with a lot of actors and models in the LA area which has been interesting. My primary focus has been headshots, but I’ve recently completed my fashion/editorial portfolio and beginning that journey as well. I love headshots, but editorial imagery has so much more wiggle room for creativity and I’m excited to see where it takes me! I also work frequently as a photo assistant, primarily for fashion shoots, which is an endless supply of knowledge and inspiration I can bring back to my studio.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To be honest, I’m kind of the worst tour guide ever! At best I could entertain a friend for one full day. But, that day would start with an adventure to Griffith Park. We would go for a nice hike up to the Observatory where they could get a great view of the city and the infamous Hollywood sign. Afterwards I’d take them to one of my favorite bars Crawford’s for some delicious friend chicken, frosty brews and billiards. We’d probably take a nap after that. Then, after we’re well rested we’d head out to a show at either 1720 or The Belasco downtown. They always have great metal bands playing there which my friends and I are pretty into. And that would be a wrap!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s an endless list of inspirations that have driven me to where I am. My family and friends have been unconditionally supportive of my path, always encouraging me with affirmations, love, and genuine excitement for my growth as an artist. I have to give a shoutout to my Life Coach Ryan Daugherty, who always knows how to pull me away from my self doubt by giving me new perspectives and tools to overcome obstacles I face. Another shoutout to Milk Studios for teaching me next to everything I know about the photo industry, how to properly use gear, and giving me the opportunity to work alongside other talented and inspirational photographers. Last but absolutely not least, my mother, who has always been my biggest supporter and fan!
