We had the good fortune of connecting with Antuan Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Antuan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Being a Black ex-felon in America would definitely make you invisible to the world but only visible to the police. In the workforce, you wouldn’t stand a chance. It was important for me to take control of my future on my own terms. The jobs I was able to get illustrated exactly what I expected. I experienced racism and disrespect. There’s no way I was going to keep allowing myself to deal with such treatment and have my well-being in question. It was time to put it all on the line.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Apex Coture Magazine is an urban variety publication that platforms professional Black entrepreneurs no matter their field of work. It’s the place you go to validate yourself. We know what happens when we allow others to tell our stories or we look to them for validation. Why do that when we’re the ones who make everything hot?

I got where I am today by being a stand-up guy and a man of my word. Doing good business and staying consistent was and is vital to being a Black-owned publication.

It was not easy at all. In fact, it was very difficult because of the lack of support and resources. I overcame it because it was either keep going or give up. I stopped looking for support from friends and family and continued to do what needed to be done until the strangers who were looking for what I did came to be a base of support.

I learned that if you wait around for the people you expect to support you, you will be waiting forever. Just do it and keep failing forward. It’ll always pay off.

I want the world to know that doing good business, being honest, and standing on your word will take you places money can never. That’s what my story is based on.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to all of the places that are connected to my business. I’ve done a lot of partying in the past so unless we’re doing something constructive, we won’t be going anywhere. I’d just suggest they find a club to hit in Orlando and send them on their way if that’s what they’re looking for.

Anyone who knows me knows that I’ve been the life of the party for a long time. Drinks and women from city to city. That part of my life is over. If we’re not celebrating success in our accomplishments then I don’t see the need to hang out.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife and kids.
