We had the good fortune of connecting with Anuja Mohla and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anuja, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After I had my son, I realized the importance of both passive and active passage of one’s heritage to the next generation. As a mom with a full-time job as a physician as well as studying to obtain a MBA, I attempt to converse with my son in Hindi and Punjabi. However, it has certainly been more challenging than I thought. As he was picking up more English words from reading books, I realized there was a lack of diverse bilingual books for early learners. My son’s love for books and my desire to share my culture with him inspired me to start Apni Heritage in 2021.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a full time physician. I was born and brought up in India. I moved to America when I was fifteen years old with a dream to lead a successful career. After numerous years of education, hard work and countless training hours during medical school and residency, I have been working as a physician for ten years now. In the last five years, I have obtained my Masters in Business Administration and pivoted to a more administrative side of medicine. I currently work as a Medical Director of Revenue Integrity which includes developing processes and workflows in Utilization Management at a large health care system. While I love my full-time job, my passion to educate children about their Indian heritage inspired me to create Apni Heritage. It is my way to contribute to the Indian community at large with a main focus to help busy working parents like me have easy access to educational resources inspired by Indian Heritage.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Philadelphia City. I love old city with a stone pathways that give a very European feel. I love eating out good fresh food from variety of cultures around the world.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Besides my family and friends who have supported me through this journey, I would like to give a shout out to Aditi W. Singh at RaisingWorldChildren. I worked with her on my first book series as my coach and editor. Over years, our professional partnership has blossomed into a friendship as well. She is a great writer, editor and coach. She has published some great award winning books inspired by Indian culture as well.
