We had the good fortune of connecting with Ariana D’souza and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ariana, what do you attribute your success to?
Success to one, is sometimes just a starting step to another. That’s why success is different to everyone. For me, the idea behind success is basic. Ultimately, I feel most successful in life when I am happy with where I am, at the current moment. I see success as a long road of discovery rather than individual goals that I just need to get out of the way. Not to say that I don’t have goals, because I do…. but success to me is more than just goals. The most important factor in my success is how I deal with adversity. As both an Actor and Singer, I like to say that I study ways to deal with rejection more than ways to deal with booking. It’s so easy to celebrate our wins, but celebrating our challenges – is another thing altogether. I think the rejections in our lives are opportunities, you learn from them. Getting rejected is like a reminder that you are just one step closer to achieving a goal and I am the type of person who treats my failures as how one would treat their successes. It is the act of celebrating the small successes in your life which lead you to celebrate the bigger successes.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Every artist in LA has their own story. We’re all in the same boat, looking to be booked, training and meeting people. But, I’ve always seen myself as an observer, I’m very intuitive and I feel very deeply. I think when it comes to my craft, I often find a deep understanding of the character that I’m about to play. I treat the character that I become as a blank slate and then I layer on top – that creative state that you feel when you’re behind a camera, there are no words to describe it. This empathy that I utilize in acting is something that I have visibly seen set me apart from other actors, it is the act of letting yourself completely go to become a whole new person. I’m still on my journey, I have lots more goals that I would like and will achieve, but I have gotten to where I am today because of the consistency. Consistency is always key. It’s coming back and finishing what you started.
I am most proud of the short, indie and feature films I have both starred and supported in amongst all of the film, commercial work and theatre that I have done in recent years, and I am excited to continue with this work, booking, and hopefully to one-day release music in the future. A lot of this professional work that I have done has led me to where I am today. I see the little things, such as doing theatre when I grew up, as baby steps that have guided me to do bigger things such as booking films and commercials, and I see myself doing even bigger things in the future. I celebrate the small successes to conquer the bigger ones. This mindset is why I am here today and I would love to say that it’s been easy but it’s not at all, I know it’s about to get much, much harder, but I’m ready for it. Being consistent is hard, life throws so many distractions at you but you just have to keep coming back to the same things while you commit to a life where you tick off the fears that you face. You get one life, so live it to the fullest, and enjoy every part of it – that’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned, if you’re not happy with what you’re doing, find something else to do. I want the world to remember my name, Ariana D’souza and to believe, to always believe in the artists who have dreams that they are working endlessly, every day, to achieve.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
LA is such a fun city. It’s one of those cities where I feel like you can truly never run out of things to do. I’ve Vegan and LA has so many Vegan spots which I would recommend to literally everyone. The Butcher’s Daughter, Love Amaro Pizzeria and Van Leeuwen ice cream, if you’re craving a dessert. If you’re from the East Coast, I lived in New York for a couple of months and you can find some of these restaurants out there too. Being a gym rat, I also have a ton of workout classes that I love to go to, Barry’s, Soul Cycle or Solidcore. Some of my favorite beaches have been Venice, Santa Monica, Long Beach, and many of the beaches in Malibu. Obviously, if you want less commercial beaches you’d have to drive out further but these are great for a quick trip. I love the sun and being outdoors, so some great hiking spots would be Runyon Canyon or The Hollywood Sign, but there are also some further ones where you can find waterfalls, which I’ve added to my little bucket list too. There is an endless amount of things to do, there are concerts at Sofi, that’s where I saw one of my favorite artists, The Weeknd. But in general, there’s lots of clubs and rooftop parties as well as raves and events in the hills which you can never get enough of.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be who I am today if it wasn’t for my day ones. You know who you are…. the people who have been supporting me endlessly from the moment when I first picked up a script. My loved ones, the people I have been trained by and with over the years, the people who choose to make my day just a little bit better, because, why not make someone’s day better? It is the belief that I received from others, as a younger version of myself that has led me to be the person I am today and I am forever grateful for that.
