We had the good fortune of connecting with Arieh Berl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Arieh, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor to success is internally defining what that is to yourself. In a creative space, to me, success is really about expressing myself and getting my feelings across in ways that I can’t really do anyway else. When I was a kid, I used to go into my own musical world where I can make anything, say anything, be weird and freaky and it was all good. I think I try and channel that every day. The minute you start thinking about the creative process of music as a business, you’re fucked. I’ve done it before and not only does it not work, but it ruins the creative process for something that I love.
So, I think the clearest path to success in music is to just go into your studio or your room or on your headphones and fully just be yourself. Run like a horse with the blinders on. Make music like no one is ever gonna hear it. If you like something, chances are other people will think it’s pretty cool too. Trust your taste!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an artist & producer from Oakland, California. I make music under the name Pink Skies, and sometimes produce records for other people as well. I don’t really know what sets me apart from anyone else who does this. I think anyone can do it. I just make sounds I like and that move me. I got to where I was today from being obsessively into music since I was a little kid, playing guitar, learning songs I liked, jamming in basements with my friends, and making our own records. We just got better and better and now I’m 30 and still know nothing. There’s always infinite to learn about music.
It was easy in some ways. Like it was always pretty natural and fun. Obviously, it’s really hard to make a living and if you are thinking about money and business it will be very hard. I’ve definitely gotten bogged down in that before, and when you’re thinking about all that the music suffers and it makes it very hard. But if you are just thinking about the music, you are golden and just let it flow through you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For food I love Bub & Grandma’s, and Holbox is one of the best meals I’ve ever had. I also really love El Condor for Mexican food and margaritas. My favorite place has to be Checker Hall and Lodge Room. Best food, and best music venue in LA hands down. I like being outside so hanging out in Malibu, Playa Del Rey, or walking around the Silver Lake Reservoir is where you’ll find me. I like the Los Feliz Par 3, Pickleball @ Allendale Park, and swimming wherever I can.
There’s so many interesting places to hang out in LA, but those are what come to mind.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d liike to shout out Brett Fink. Brett is a friend I met in college, who has believed in what I’ve been doing since the days of my old punk band. He’s always been a smart guy, a great mentor, has good instincts, and has been very encouraging and helpful to me as a friend and someone I’ve worked with.
